Cancelling car insurance. will I be penalised?
I pay my car insurance by monthly direct debit and have now sold the car (halfway through the year). As I am not looking to buy another car for a while, can I stop my premiums to the insurance company as i am no longer benefiting from the insurance?

If you provide proof that you sold the car (a bill of sale, a receipt that tags were turned in) most insurers will not charge a penalty for a mid-term cancellation.

That said, how long is "a while" before you get another car? Within the next six months? I'm asking because some insurance companies offer a total suspension of the policy, where they keep the policy open and charge you no additional premium, so that you can easily reinstate it when you get another car. This is much easier than going through the entire application process again.

If you think you'll be replacing you car before too long this may be a good option for you. Call your agent and see if your company offers this benefit.

Another note: If you financed your premium the premium finance company (not the insurance company) may charge a fee for the cancellation. Make sure you contact them and ask for any money that is owed to you, as they are not going to just send you a check if there is any money left over.

Best of luck!

Yes, of course. Call your insurance company and tell them you've sold the car and want to cancel your policy. Depending on how much of your total premium for the year you've already paid and how much you owe for the portion of the year you were covered, you may get a refund from them, or you may owe them another payment or a portion of one.

You should always cancel your insurance immediately as soon as you sell your car.

Absolutely. You should have done this as soon as the car was titled in the other person's name. Maybe you can get a refund for the days you didn't have the car but hadn't yet told them. If you are concerned that this will take a while to stop, tell your bank to stop accepting the direct debits.

I've never had a problem canceling insurance. Generally, we had another car to insure and stuck with the same company but that is not necessary.

Hi there. Usually if you cancel after 14 days you will be charged a small fee. As you are halfway through your policy you will be charged a higher fee. Im not sure how much it will be with your insurance company but it will be around £45. Its an admin fee for cancelling early - bit over the top hey?

You also get a negative side of not earning your year of no claims discount but if your not buying another vehicle that wont really be important to you.

yes u will!!

you can cancel it anytime you want. if you cancel it, it will be "short rated" meaning yes you will pay penalty. the better way to do it is to just not pay it and let it cancel for nonpay. then there is no penalty and you can then just pay what you owe after it canceled.

Aibrean
Yes (you can cancel, and the penalization depends on the company).

FLCajun77
Yes since you no longer own the car you should stop paying. If you move out of an apartment do you keep paying rent on that apartment even though you do not live there?

Nate W
Sure you can. Any "unearned" premium they collected should be refunded back to you.
