Don't Litter! Spay & Neuter | Car Insurance after College? |
I was wondering if anyone knew what the deal is with auto insurance after a student graduates from college. I know that once I am no longer a student I lose medical insurance under my parents plan, but is it the same with auto insurance? I'm asking only because I graduated in May and my dad onlyjust mentioned to me that I might not be covered if I got into an accident, which is obviously BAD since it's completely irresponsible to drive without insurance. Any help would be great!
Oh...and I know I could just call the insurance company and ask them, but I don't want to just on the off chance that they decided to immedeitely remove me when I tell them I graduated.

Well I don't have a full time job right now, and I'm working two part time jobs to get by. I don't mind paying them money to keep me on their plan, which they only pay like 200.00 a month for three cars+house insurance, and if I got my own plan it would be like 150.00. So if I CAN stay on their plan for now, that would make the most sense. And also, the car is in my dad's name since the loan is in his name (I'm paying the loan though) |

Nope, you can be covered under dad's policy, as long as you're driving one of dad's cars, forever.
But you can't put YOUR car under HIS policy. The name on the title has to match the name on the policy. |

Your parents can fund your auto insurance at any age. Most medical insurance for the majority of young adults ends at 23; then you're on your own (unless your plan states other wise). Once you get a full time job, it's probably time to "man/woman up" and pay for your own insurance.
Perhaps you should let your mom/dad spoil themselves with a nice vacation with that money their using to pay your car insurance bill! after you get your own insurance? |

I'm certain both policies don't correspond to each other. Auto insurance is separate and you won't be kicked off your parents policy after you graduate. Insurance always follows the vehicle regardless of who is driving the car. If you let your friend drive the car its insured but if anything happens it still effects the owners policy. However, both parties can be sued. That's why its always best not to let friends drive your car. If your really concerned about the issue still always go request for a free quote online and speak to the agents that respond to you. Then you can get a better idea of whats best to do. |
