Last week i received a letter from the bank informing me i had been charged 39 pounds for a direct debit being returned unpaid.
I was stunned as i had left the money in the bank.
I was later to discover a car insurance policy i had not renewed had began taking pay ments out of my bank.
I had got back the 22 pound that was taken for the insurance but was told i would have to get the chrges refunded of the insurance company.
I have called them and was stunned with their response.
It was up to me to let them know i no longer wished to have insurance with them , well i was told as the insurance policy had lapsed back in August that that was that.
They say they have sent me two letters, neither of which i have received.
It is their policy apparently to continue on a policy even though they have no authotisation to do so. I was never made aware this was the route they took when no communication took place by either side.
Yes, until you cancel in writing to them, they will continue withdrawing the payments from your account.
A renewal notification is NOT the same thing as a legal cancellation notice - those usually only get issued for nonpayment, which doesn't happen when you have it set up to pay directly.
I seriously doubt you were never made aware of it - I'm sure it was all spelled out on the EFT agreement you signed when you first started it up. You probably either forgot, or never read the small print in the first place.

That is how insurance works. I have had auto insurance with the same company 18+ years. I do not call them every 6 months at renewal and tell them to keep charging me.
People are never happy....If they stopped charging and just let it lapse you would be bitching that they lapsed your coverage without your permission

That's how's most insurance companies work. They continue coverage until you inform them to stop. Even if your coverage is supposed to end, they will continue to renew your coverage until you tell them to stop.
If you are allowing them to make automatic withdrawals from your checking account, it is your responsibilty to make sure they stop.
