Car insurance...need help!?
Can a person get car insurance for a car that they do not own?
I presently drive a car in which the title is under my ex's name.
I really do not want to have to deal with my ex at all. I make all the car payments, but my credit is still not good enough to put the car in my name.
I would love to know what my options are....soooon!

I don't think so. I believe it has to match the name on the registration. Maybe a mom and pop rinky-dink place will insure you., or you just have to deal with your ex. Best of luck.

Edit: I know State Farm won't do it, and I'm pretty sure Geico won't do it either. As for the other companys, I don't know.

You cannot insure something you do not own because you do not have an insurable interest in the item. This means the loss of the item would present no financial, quantifiable loss to you. I can't insure your car and you can't insure mine. I see that you make payments on it, etc. but legally it isn't yours and you aren't responsible for it. Insurance is based on legal principles and you have no insurable interest in the vehicle.

However, these situations do arise for reasons such as you listed. You could get a non-owner policy as one answere noted but this would be for your temporary use of any auto you may borrow, i.e. because you don't have a vehicle of your own - that's why it's called a "non-owner" policy. Obviously, tihs vehicle is available for your regular use.

You could be insured along with your ex on a policy in which he is the named insured and you are a driver on the policy. This would, of course, continue entanglement with the ex but then you are making payments on his car - an entanglement of its own.

Or, you could try misrepresenting the situation to an insurance company. Go with a non-owner policy and drive that car everywhere. Of course, should you have an accident and the adjuster discovers you have misrepresented the situation you could possibly create a coverage question that could leave you without insurance. Material misrepresentations will do that to you. If they did cover, they would have no obligation to you but to the ex, the owner of the vehicle.

Tough answer, tough world, I know. But, when you ask an insurer to cover you, you are asking for their legal obligation to you in exchange for premium. Therefore, it should not surprise that they proceed along legal principles in doing so.

Progressive will insure a vehicle that is not titled in your name. Contact a local independent agent for a quote with Progressive.

If You are making payments I would have the ex sign the title
back to you....unfortunately you are between a rock and hard place on this. YOU CAN'T have an auto policy in your name on someone Else's titled vehicle. If their was an accident The check would be out to you BUT your ex would have rights to it. And the application states who "owns" the vehicle. This would be mis representation and could prevent you from getting insurance in the future.

Buy the car from the EX for a buck.

YES! My Aunt & Uncle still have my car in their name, but my car insurance is in my name and I pay for it etc. The interest rate they were paying was a lot lower than me taking a new loan out, so I just pay them every month. My insurance is through Drive, by Progressive, and there were no problems as all signing up!

Call a local agent and see if the can write a "Named Non-Owner" policy for you.

Yes, if they LEASE it.

Um, you can't get a policy in HIS name, and you can't insure a car you don't own or lease. You're going to have to deal with him, sorry.

Just a word of warning. I've had a COUPLE of clients in nasty breakup situations like yours, call the police and report their car STOLEN. Had a lady with two kids STRANDED when the police towed "her" car out of the grocery store lot, to the police impound lot. So you REALLY need to put something in writing, that you get the car, or that you're LEASING the car.

And when you're DONE making the payments, you know that you have no RIGHT to the car, right, that they'll send your ex the title, and the ex can just go ahead and sell the car right out from under you????

Right now, all the options are with YOUR EX, not you. So you'd better do something about that.
