Hi.A mate of mine purchased a car insurance from AA.com in july2008 & paid the full annual amount upfront.
About 6 weeks later someone vandalised the car,so she he called the police & AA to report the incident.He told me that the AA said "The damage sounds like it will have to be written off",If this is the case,does he get the remaining 46 weeks of this insurance money back?,I know this sounds silly ,but he thinks by asking the AA ,they might accuse him.....Thanks |

In America if the car you insure is a total loss you can cancel the policy effective the date the car was totalled (or effective the date you turn back in the rental car, if you rented one to replace the damaged car) and get all of the unearned premium refunded, or if you get a new car to replace the old one you can just put the new car on the old policy and only pay any difference in premium between the old car and the new car.
Your friend should definitely ask. Cars get damaged and vandalized all the time. This is a routine question and will not in itself raise suspicion.

When the Insurer pays out on a policy, it has the right to end the policy.
It all depends what happens to the car - if they repair it, then no problem, but a write-off will probably mean an end to the policy without refund.
This is because the policy has a term (usually 1 year), and the payment method for the premium (monthly, quarterly, direct debit etc) is nothing to do with the policy itself. |

Your questions sound confusing too me and maybe its just me. But you said it would be written off. Does that mean that the damage was under their deductible? If so, then the insurance will not be paying anything out. Did AA do an estimate? If not, then have them write one.
If you think your friend if being treated unfairly then call your state's insurance commissioner for help. |

It sounds to me like it means that they will not be covering the claim.
If the adjuster said that the damage is being written off, it means that its not being covered either due to low appraisal vs deductible on policy, or due to the reason of the damage being excluded from the policy.
If your friend wants to cancel his insurance, or if the insurance company is cancelling the policy due to their guidelines, then he can get a refund of the money not used for insurance during his insured effective dates of policy. Some companies will short-rate the policy, meaning they will keep an amount of unearned premium and refund remainder or just pro-rate and refund what has not been used.
He should definitely call the company and ask, as it is his right as an insured. Nothing wrong with that! |

Hi, this stumps me and I have to admit that I don't know.
I suppose he/she will need another car so when she gets it she'll be able to get some of this money into the new one but it could be BS so I'd rather say that the most logical thing to do would be for your mate to ask AA directly.
There is no chance they'll accuse him/her he'll be talking to someone like him that WORKS for AA, they don't care, this is why the UK is TOPS for customer relations! It's total freedom of information. |
