A friend of mine recommended me to an investment group who deals in all areas of insurance, mutual funds, money markets, etc. I met with them to discuss savings options and they immediately jumped to the cash value life insurance. I know they get bigger kick backs on life insurance as I worked briefly in that industry for a short period of time. I wanted to see what other people's opinions were on cash value life insurance and whether or not the savings part was really worth it or if I should just put the money some where else. |

Usually investing in life insurance is not the best option. Once you have exhausted all of your other tax deferred options like 401ks and IRAs and if you are in good health it may make sense versus investing in fully taxable investments. Annuities fall in the same category. There are also some estate tax benefits to universal life insurance that apply to high wealth individuals.
If it is something that you want to pursue make him show you some guaranteed illustrations and don't invest until you are comfortable with what they are doing. |

Do you need insurance? It sounds like you went for investment advice and were shown an insurance policy. If that's the case then you need to go elsewhere and tell your friend to do the same.
There's nothing wrong with the product, but insurance is for insurance purposes. You can get a better rate of return with a savings account. HOWEVER, if you need insurance and your income precludes you from opening a ROTH IRA then a cash value policy can make a lot of sense. If you're eligible for a ROTH and they're showing you a cash value policy find someone else to help you as they're looking after their own best interest and not yours.

The primary purpose of life insurance is protect others who depend on you for support should you die - not an investment. If your primary goal is investing (rather than protection of loved ones), insurance is NOT the right thing for you. |

Always invest outside of your insurance!! A few things about Whole life insurance that they don't tell you is that upon death the life insurance company keeps your savings it does not go to your beneficiary, also if you would like to withdraw some of your money from your savings they will charge you an interest rate until you pay it back.( DUHH its your own money). ALWAYS go with TERM life insurance. |

Depending on your age, financial situation, responsibilities and your ability to save, will dictate the type of life insurance you should consider. If you are young and have a growing family then a life policy with a built-in savings plan is ideal. Especially if you have a difficult time saving money. And the interest paid on your money in a life plan is usually greater than at a bank or S&L.
If however, you are older, most of your bills are paid, have no kids to support or put through college, then possibly a term life policy would be best. These are strictly a "death" policy and are much cheaper for greater coverage. |

From an INVESTMENT point of view, you are guaranteed LOSE 90% of what you put in.
Sorry, this is a no brainer. Life insurance is for if you DIE. It's a crappy investment tool. Me, personally, I'd be willing to guarantee you a loss of only 80% if you gave ME that thousand dollars. Which makes writing me a check, twice as profitable.
But whole life can pay commissions to the AGENT, of up to 95% of the first year premium - which is why they're trying to sell you on it. |
