You CAN get insurance on children for multiple reasons:
-Burial/living expenses just in case. If your child dies, are you going back to work the next day or will you need grieving time/money to live on?
-Many policies allow you to add more insurance down the road without medical underwriting. This would be a perfect example of why it would've been good to get the insurance at birth without the asthma diagnosis.
-If they need cash, they can borrow it against the cash value buildup in the policy. Usually, by the 19th or so year (college) , there's just as much cash value (GUARANTEED) as what you've put in.
I took out a policy on my 1 year old for $12/month for $10,000. I don't pay a penny after 20 years and she's guaranteed to have $10,000 for burial the rest of her life. I will pay roughly $2800 total. |

If the asthma isn't under control, the carrier's underwriters may have said that he/she would be too high a risk to insure at this time. You may want to try another carrier who might have less stringent underwriting guidelines and/or have an exclusion clause for asthma-related deaths. Once the asthma is under control, you may want to try this carrier again.
Whole life policies have stable premiums over a person's lifetime - they would be higher priced than term when a person is young - but as a person ages, the premium would be less than a term policy AND guaranteed renewable without an examination as long as the premiums are paid.

Whole life that doesn't go up in price as you age, costs a TON, right from the beginning. The question - why? Because asthma KILLS children. So your child is a bad risk, from their point of view. Life insurance is a BET, whether or not someone is going to die. The premium vs. the payout are the odds, and the odds will always favor the house.
A CHILD doesn't have much need for life insurance, besides burial costs. So, what's the POINT of the insurance? You can take that $50 a month for a "guaranteed issue" policy and put it in the bank, and if your child lives at least four more years, you're ahead of the game.
I don't buy life insurance on my kids. I think it's a ripoff. So, redefine the GOAL of the "life insurance". Any policy you get is going to be "rated" which means, way expensive. AND, you're probably not going to keep in more than five years. And in either case, the insurance company is going to make a TON of money off of you. |

Well, because of the asthma, but indeed the question is why you need life insurance on a child. Usually you can add a rider to your own policy to cover ALL of your children for about $60/year to cover them at $5,000 each (or thereabouts - maybe $10k for $60).
Does the child have a job where the family is financially dependent upon them? |

Why on earth get life insurance for a child? Children are financial liabilities not assets. The purpose of life insurance is to take care of dependents if the bread winner dies. |
