I want to get house contents insurance, and until recently were insured with one of the high street banks, I have a minor conviction for common assault which has led to me having a criminal record, totally clear record until this. My bank has said that I cannot get contents insurance due to this?, I find it bizarre that I have never claimed in the past and now they are saying they cannt insure my contents does anyone know a reputable company who do I phoned the company named after a famous statesman and they said the same?, any advice please. my conviction has nothing to do with anything other than common assault

Have you tried contacting NACRO (I believe they have a website), who must have come across this thousands of times in their dealings with released prisoners/offenders?
There is also an organisation called UNLOCK, which deals with "reformed offenders", and they may be able to help you. |

Contact an insurance broker - try contactiing BIBA and they have lists of brokers specialising in this sort of thing.
(Unless you have VERY basic insurance needs and don't mind being overcharged for poor cover don't bother with banks or direct companies) |

Depending on how long ago your conviction was I would try to get it expunged. I know that most banks/financial institutions do a background check before they'll give you monies. |

try a high street broker as they have many companies they deal with and some have companies that will not look at your criminal record |

Insurance companies usually only look at if you have committed any insurance fraud. That's it.
Call some other companies. Keep trying. Most companies will not look at a criminal record. |
