Could a 17 year old new driver get insurance for a 1.8-2.0 litre?
Hi...

If i was to get a car lets say a 1.8 to a 2.0 litre could i put this car on one of my parents policies and be able to get affordable insurance... My parents have many years no claims discount... Would the insurance firm grant me permission to be insured for a car with a big engine under my parents policy?

I was thinking of a VW golf Gti (Mk3) or maybe an old BMW ...

Please don't suggest sh!t cars like puntos, saxos nd all those because they are for the boy racers...

Don't get insured under your parents policy, it will hurt you in the long run.

Whether you like it or not, get a small first car, just for the first year or so until you can built up a little no claims bonus.

haha .....of course u can get insurance for any car ,when i was 17 i was paying 2000 pounds a year in insurance for my turbo machine :/

dont be a mug get a reasonable car stop trying to impress everyone and use the money u saved to enjoy your life instead of just throwing it down the pan to some greedy insurance company ( get a proper car at 25 will be cheap to insure and worth the wait )

Insurance companies will generally insure you for any vehicle - they'll just charge you a bomb for your policy if you're a new driver with a fast car

ok right
1 if the car is registered to you, you have to insure it in your own name.
2 your parents ncd is prob in use and you will not be able to use it if they are using it on there own policies
3 you will prob be able to get insurance just be prepared to have a huge premium.

have a look for the sort of car that you are likely to buy - for example on autotrader - take the details of it then go to an insurance comparison site - for example confused.com - put in your details as they would be at the time you pass - and get quotes.
I am looking for a car and I do this for every car i think i might be interested in to see how much it would cost exactly!

sorry to tell you but 'fronting' is illegal - putting a parent on as the main policy holder and yourself as a named driver! And you may not be fully insured if you have an accident whilst driving - however putting a parent as a named driver and keeping yourself as the main policy holder will still reduce the premium. Your parents no claims wil make no difference to you you have to start your own. Hope this helps! x

Hope this helps! Good Luck

Okay so as an agent I will tell you this. yes you can get insured for whatever vehicle your driving. I would actually suggest that you go on your parents policy atleast for a year. Then at the end of the year you can go and get your own insurance and get a spin off account which menas you will get credit for having insurance through your parents. Be aware the faster the car and the bigger the motor the higher the premium. Make sure you tke drivers Ed. and if you maintain atleast a 3.0 on your GPA you can receive another discount that way. Good luck hope I helped.

Yup its very possible.

Im 17, and passed my test last week and im driving a 1.8 Volvo V50 which is under my parents policy so im a named driver on it, which means the insurance is only about £1500

What insurance group its in will effect it alot though. Mines in group 9, but I imagine a golf GTI will be much higher so the insurance will be really high as well.

Ive seen plenty of ppl around my age with old BMWs, the 3 series <1998 is in group 10 so insurance shouldnt be too bad with that. I actually wanted one of them, but my parents decided safety was the way to go!

Bear in mind though that hot hatch backs go through loadssss of fuel, i get like 25mpg out of mine (not a hot hatchback though!)

My brother got a older BMW such as a 2000 model and he was able to insure it under my parents insurance. You can lower your insurance too if you take a certain test. Not sure what it is called though..

it would probably cost you a few grand to insure a big engined car. Try phoning some of the companies that advertise in Max Power as they cater more for petrol heads. I'm with Hyperformance. they were one of only 2 companies who would quote for my son to drive my 2 ltr sri.
