Critical Illness cover - is it worth it?

I am a licensed insurance agent. Yes critical insurance coverage can be a good deal or value. I would compare companies in so far as rates and plans. I have seen clients whereby critical insurance coverage has made real difference in a families financial well being. The proceeds are an indemnity based plan, which means the proceeds are paid directly to you. This money can help offset all the indirect costs that be associated with a major illness, loss of time at work, co-pays,deductibles etc

It is worth it if they paid out easily. Unfortunately they dont want to do that. There has been plenty of reports in watchdog lately where people have become ill made a claim and turned doen for something they never disclosed. One bloke got cancer made a claim and turned down because he didnt disclose he had a kidney or liver test or something like that 40 years ago!!!

Some are turned down for not disclosing their parents illness.....not everyone knows these particular for those adopted!!

You need to find a cover that you are able to tailor to yourself or visit the watchdog website for what to look for and which providers are being slagged off for their policies

Good question! I have it and am wondering that to. It seems all to often we think we are covered until will claim, then find out it doesn't cover us at all. Best thing to do is make an appointment with them and ask them exactly what you are covered on. Ive heard some cancers are not covered, decease from asbestos isn't covered and there's probably loads more.

Shop around, read the small print, go over it with a fine tooth comb, don't believe everything you hear. Better still if you have a friend in the legal profession ask them! Seriously, I have heard of lots and lots of people who have been mis-sold policies - BEWARE!

I have critical illness coverage, and I think that it is very worth it. More people get hurt, and find out that they have a debilitating disease than actually die. And most coverages have a return of premium option (which I have) which means that if you never claim on the insurance, you get all of the premiums that you have ever paid into it back...not a bad deal...if something happens to me, I get a lump sum, and if nothing ever happens to me, I get a lump sum...

No-one is invincible...most people will get seriously hurt at some point in their lives, which can have a major effect on lifestyle, family, mental health, and credit.

read the small print first ask CAB.

welcome news
It is - if you need it!

Always go to an IFA for a quote as there is a tremendous difference in the illnesses covered and the benefits provided. This is NOT a product you want to purchase yourself or through a tied agent.

At the moment the product is under review as many insurers are avoiding claims due to non-disclosure of previous conditions (even when unrelated to the circumstances of making the claim). There is talk of having a 5-year cut-off i.e. once you have been covered for 5 years then there would be no pre-existing coindition exclusion - however that has not yet been implemented.
