Currently living at home on parent's auto insurance policy, can I get my own?
I am a full-time student with a daughter and will be living at home until next Fall. I have been on my mother's insurance policy (paying for my part of the premium) since I had my license at 16. I have gotten plenty of better quotes from other companies. My question is whether or not my mother has to have me insured with her policy for am I able to get my own? I own the vehicle and it is now in my name. Can my daughter and I be considered a separate household...I pay for all our living expenses.

Thanks, Snoopy. Your answer is helpful but wanted to let you know I'm actually a single father ;)

Yes, you can get your own policy. It might be a good idea to talk to a local agent. You can connect with one at no cost at http://www.myinsurancequotes.net. Fill out the quote form and a local agent will call you and help you through this.

Yes you can. She on the other hand may loose her mulit-car discount.

Yes, you can get your own separate policy. Be sure to mention that you are a full time student. If you get good grades, ask for a discount for that, too. You don't mention your age, but if you've had your license for several years without claims, you ought to be able to use that as leverage as well, even though you are a guy. :-)

You sound like you already know the best tip - shop around.

You need to get insurance on your own, your mom can not insure property she does not own. ( it is called "insurable interest") Your mom's insurance company would want to see proof that you have insurance elsewhere before they would take you off her policy but you would still be covered if you drive her car or if she drives yours.

chickey_soup
You can get your own. In fact you can get your own even if the car isn't in your name.

And no it does not have to be the same or similar to your parents (poster below).

mbrcatz
yes, you can. Auto policies have NOTHING to do with seperate households. But likely, you WILL have to list all household members on your policy.

since your mother has no interest in your vehicle you should have a separate policy. There are other factors that enter into rates including whether you have multiple vehicles, multiple products, and even credit. You can have your own policy and probably should have it. You may actually cause moms insurance to go up if you remove your vehicle from her policy, I say this just to warn you. I wish you luck. Talk with a local agent and be informed about all situations before you make a quick move.

snoopy
You could have had your own at age 16.

You should have your own.

You should also be able to ask this question of an insurance agent. You're a mom now, you'll have to do adult things like this.

Yes, but it has to have the same policy limits at your parents. If they have 100,000/300,000, you must have that also.
