D oyou think kids need cell phones?

well yeah if there going some where but not to do any thing with them

How many of us survived the vast majority of our lives without a cell phone?
I heard some ridiculous story on CNN the other day about how this 15 year old or so young lady's mother felt like her daughter had a right to carry her phone for her protection. This was so important, in fact, that it had already averted a crisis! It seems that an unruly mob of children surrounded this poor little girl and were harrassing her with the intent to harm her at some point. (I am not making light of this part at all. I feel sorry for anyone that has to endure cruelty at the hands of their peers.) Evidently, she was able to use her cell phone to call for assistance. I am a little skeptical of this story. The little girl lived in New York City, and I find it almost impossible that an adult would not see a young girl in this situation and come to her defense. I will admit that I don't live there, and I couldn't argue with a resident that told me that people in New York would not assist in this situation. That said, I live in Dallas, not Mayberry, and the only thing that would keep me from extricating her from that situation and giving the children a piece of my mind, were it me, would be if one of them was brandishing a weapon...then, I'd call 911. I would not turn my head and say, "I'm sure she's got her cell on her."
School aged children, even teenagers, should all be accountable to the adults that are to supervise them. If the parents and guardians are watching the kids, you don't necessarily need the dedicated line.
Also, I am sure that you will demonstrate that there are instances whereby the phone has proven beneficial. I just don't know that you can prove that this is going to result in a definite decrease of all the ills that beset our kids, where the benefit will outweigh the cost. The cost being wasted productivity at school - they are talking about having programs where the kids turn in their phones each day, which is baloney...make them leave em at home, the school does not need to pay another administrator to run this collection/distribution program. And, of course, the whole reason that they're talking about doing this in the first place is that the kids are normal bratty kids, and won't leave the stuff alone when they know they should. It's eating away at our kids learning time at school, and at the taxpayers' money.

Not really. I don't see the point in it. They shouldn't be allowed to have one until high school years when they have parties, go to dances, etc... Verizon Wireless now have a phone with a preinstalled 4 numbers ONLY that is especially for kids. They can use those phones in case of an emergency to call home. It only has 4 buttons and so it's safe for kids to prevent them from socializing.

I think in the case of an emergency they are a great idea. Those plans where they only have certain numbers are ideal. But for social reasons...no

Justin, if you are a parent, then you shouldn't be coming here to decide how you should parent. If you are a kid, it doesn't matter what we think, it matters what your parents think. ...What does this have to do with insurance?

It depends on what they do like after school and everything. Those Fireflys that Cingular has would be awesome for kids, because you program in the only people they can call. If they do all sorts of sports and stuff then it may be useful. But just to have because they can, then no. Not until they start driving.

yes. Everybody has them why discriminate against kids? They are being stalked by perverts and other predators so why not protect them.
