PENNY | DECEASED PARENT'S LIFE INSURANCE? |
My mother died (while still employed) at Allied Signal back in 1970. Today the company is known as Honeywell. I've hit every stone wall there is in trying to research the Life Insurance company that provided benefits for Honeywell during that period (1969-1970), when it was known as Allied. Because the record retention period is well past, I have no clue how to locate the insurance company. My adoptive parents (I was an only child, adopted by my biological mom's twin brother), stated they never received any life insurance benefits. Thanks Additional Details My question was very clear -- deceased parent's life insurance (my biological mother); my adoptive parents are my deceased biological mother's twin brother and his wife. |

You may be looking in the wrong place. Yes, Allied Signal merged with Honeywell, but not until 1999 according to this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AlliedSignal. So your mother would not have been covered by Honeywell's life insurance if she was working for Allied Signal in 1970.
Not only that, but the Wikipedia article also says that prior to 1985, Allied Signal was two companies that had not yet merged: Allied Corporation and Signal Companies. And guess what? Each of these was known by yet other names earlier on: Allied Chemical & Dye and Signal Oil & Gas. The article gives this link to exact dates for the name changes, so you can find out what the company was called at the time your mother was there. http://www.globalfinancialdata.com/articles/dow_jones.html
So which company exactly did your mother work for? Because what you want to know is which life insurance company covered the employees at one of these companies (meaning, using the name of the company as it was back in 1970).
Also per the article, Allied at one point was connected somehow to the Garrett Corporation, so this may be another avenue.
How to track down the life insurance company? Ideas:
1. Search your family's attics, basements, etc. for any boxes of old papers your parents may have saved. You may find something with the life insurance info there. Maybe a benefits statement, maybe a mention in their employee handbook, etc.
2. Ask any friends or co-workers of your parents that you know worked there.
3. Advertise in the paper and/or online to find people who worked there in 1970 and see if they remember what life insurance company it was.
4. If you have a list of possible companies and were asking about the wrong company name, contact them again and ask using the correct name.
5. Write the current Honeywell CEO asking if he can track down the info. You can find this info on Honeywell's website.
One caveat: There may be a statute of limitations on this, meaning if no claim was ever filed or if it was never paid, it may be too late to get anything now. It would be worth calling your state insurance board to find out. |

So what are you asking? Are you talking about your biological mother or adoptive mother? This isn't very clear.
EDIT: I did a little searching. I hope this will help you.

So, you've contacted the company and they state that they have no records showing that there was money that was never paid.
You've contacted the state where such money would have been escheated and the state says they don't have the money.
Give it up. Either there was no such policy or your Uncle got the money and spent it on your behalf. Either way, it's not something you can sue over. |

It's almost 40 years later. It's DEFINATELY too late to file a claim. And no one is going to have access to that group policy any more. Sorry.
It's not your mom's policy. It's HONEYWELL'S policy. You can throw tons of money at this, but it's not going to be worth it. Under the slim chance that no one has filed that claim, you still can't, now. Legally, you're not her child, anyway. Your father would be the ONLY one possibly, that they would talk to - but this is too old.
If it makes you feel better, the group employee benefit per death, at that time, was probably about $500. Which, after all, is plenty enough to cover a funeral, in 1970. |

You don't say if your mother was married or not. Also she could have left beneficiary as her parent this is often done if there is no spouse. It is more difficult to set up a trust for minor children to name them as beneficiary since you would also have to legally name a guardianin most cases. Try checking to see if there was a union they would carry some information in archives. But they as well as Honeywell cannot change her designation once she has deceased. |
