Johnny | Debt collector for medical insurance Eye exam? |
15 months ago, I went to get an eye exam at my health clinic (I have been with them for 15+ years). A couple weeks later, I received a bill for almost $300 for a simple eye exam! The 2 eye-drops ALONE were $44 ($22 for 1 drop!) Insurance covered about $50. I still have not paid it, because it is absolutely outrageous. I called around to 5 eye exam places, and the lowest was $54, and the highest was $85.30. Now they have turned it over to a debt collector, who called me today. What can/should I do? It is not because I am too poor to pay. Will they accept $85.30, and that is that? (again, charging almost $300 for the exact same thing that $54 gets you.) Are there any things I should say/not say? I plan on (legally) recording all phone calls with the collector, and demanding written confirmation for any 'over-the-phone agreement.' Any other tips? Lousy answers get thumbs-down (such as 'pay your bills!) Additional Details Also, they never informed me what the charges would be prior to me receiving the bill in the mail, and they had no prices posted. |

If you saw an ophthalmologist the rate is not outrageous...but if you saw an optometrist the $50.00 range is average. Why did you wait so long to complain? You could contact your state's insurance commissioner for the lawful rates in your area... should have asked more questions up front...lesson learned... |

I've never seen a medical provider 'post charges'.
And it's a bit late now to try to settle the bill. It's likely that the provider SOLD the debt to the collector, so now you'd have to negotiate with the collector. If they take you to court, they WILL win - you are ALWAYS responsible to pay for services you received. So when the insurance pays $50 on a $300 bill (looks like they aren't in network any more), it's up to YOU to immediately track down what's wrong.
So, they're going to look at how easy it will be to collect, when they get a judgement. If you have assets, and a job where wages can be attached, they're not very likely to negotiate.
It doesn't matter what you say - you owe this debt. You can ASK the collector what they'll settle for, but they don't have to agree! Get any settlement agreements in writing BEFORE you send in the $$. And next time you go to ANY provider, call your insurance company to verify that they are in network. These things change faster than some people change their underwear. |

I recommend talking to a credit counselor to see what the damages might be if you don't pay the bill, and talking to a lawyer about your options. Search the web for free offerings of both of these services (advice sent via email). In your search for and experience with these services, note the 'vocabulary' these professionals use, and emulate this vocabulary in your conversations with the collector. This may help you establish credibility as someone who is not trying to get out of a bill but rather is challenging an unfair charge. Also, I know this answer is probably not what you are hoping for...If this gets really stressful for you and begins to affect your functioning, you may want to consider paying the bill and moving on. I'm sorry this happened to you. It's unfair. Maybe you can look back on it someday and see it as an opportunity to begin a 15+ year relationship with a more patient-friendly health clinic. |

First contact the clinic and ask for an explaination of the charges. Ask them if they will consider reducing any of the charges based on your financial position.
Unfortunately, the clinic has probably sold their receivables to the collection agency due to the age of your bill. If you make a small payment ($10) you should be able to get the collection agency off your back while you negotiate with the clinic. |

Vision coverage is often separate from health coverage.
Depending on what type of eye exam you had, it could make a big difference in whether or not your insurance pays and how much, if they do.
First, having prices posted is a pipe dream. It doesn't happen -- because they charge different clients different prices. Yes, you read that correctly. It's entirely likely that they billed it to you at those rates based on the fact that you had insurance. Those may be the insurance-company negotiated rates (as insane as that sounds.) Or it may be that they are not included in your insurance company's network.
Or it could be that it's being considered "vision" instead of "health" and insurance companies typically only cover 10% for vision.
Honestly, you're going to have to do some investigating to get to the bottom of it. If you can't be bothered to do so (as you obviously didn't BEFORE you had this done), then just pay the bill and consider it a lesson learned. No amount of belly-aching is likely to change the situation and you'll only end up screwing up your credit rating. |
