Dental Insurance issue...please help,............?
I recently been laid off from my employer so I no longer have health insurance. But a few months ago, I paid my dentist $600 for a full year of cleaning and examination while I had health insurance. I have an appointment with the dentist tomorrow and now the dental office is demanding that I pay $140 for the examination tommorrow(they found out I no longer have insurance). I explained to the receptionist that I simply can not afford that, so she reduced the cost to $40. I am confused, shouldn't they honor our prepaid plan? Is what they are doing legal? Can I get my money back for the unused portion?? Please help.

They can't honour the prepaid plan because it was under the condition that your insurance would cover part of the cost. Now that your insurance is not covering it the office can't be expected to just "eat the cost" because you lost coverage. I do not know if you can get the money back from your dentist, it depends on what the contract you signed says.

On another note: It's weird to prepay for all your yearly dental visits at once. How many cleanings are you getting per year? Am I to understand you paid $600 out of pocket and then there was still a balance that the insurance paid? A full dental cleaning and checkup usually costs between 180 and 210 (this all depends on how much treatment you need of course but that's an average, and that is WITHOUT the cost of initial exam and any charges for extras like fillings on cavities) so based on that you'd be getting 3 cleaning a year with your 600 but you also had insurance so how often were you supposed to be going?

Anyway what they are doing as far as charging you more for the appointments because you no longer have insurance is completely legal and within their rights. My concern is that you were being overcharged in the first place, and that they asked for a year upfront (very odd).

OK, before I had dental insurance, cleaning and exam with xrays cost me about $90.

Why in the world would you pay $600 for that??

And, if you PREPAID for cleaning and exams, why does INSURANCE have anything to do with it?

I'm thinking something isn't right here. Either you didn't pay the DENTIST, or you didn't pay for cleaning and exams.
