Dental insurance vs dental discount card?
hi all! so, i need two root canals and two crowns, and as a poor full-time pre-med student i have no dental insurance. i looked into the option one dental discount card, which is 55 bucks per year and gets you 25-30% off, supposedly. does anyone know if this is my best route? i know i would have a large deductible if i got dental insurance i could afford. any suggestions? thanks
Additional Details
dental insurance in NOT too cheap to need dental discounts, genius- there are deductibles. plus i need a ROOT CANAL and wouldnt be able to get one for months if i were to get dental insurance now. everyone else, thank you for your help!

You wouldn't have a large deductible if you got dental insurance, but you'd have to wait 12-18 months for major services to kick in which sounds like you can't wait for that.

The problem with some dental discount cards is you get a much lower caliber dentist. Meaning the dentists makes no money if you come in for a cleaning so sometimes they need to find things wrong....also some will really limit your ability to see them.

The BEST kind of dental discount is to get one that's used by group plans, etc.... Aetna is one of those plans and I think GE is as well. My clients also have a lot of nice things to say about Careington.

$55 sounds a little low in cost...most of them run $70-$110...so I'd check the network and the discounts. All discount plans will publish your costs when you go in for the different services.

You can use the serach engine on my site that looks at 30+ different discount plans and also allows you to search for the dentists, etc....

Hope that helps,

Jeff

PS I'd shy away from Ameriplan as it's an "Amway" of dental benefits -- meaning most of your money goes to pay the multi-levels of marketing instead of going towards the benefit. That's why it's expensive...and not sold by insurance agents...

PPS You'd never want a discount health plan since you could lose your house, but why would you want to pay $500/year for dental INSURANCE that provides $1,000 of benefit? Third guy's answer is a goof....I sell both and more and more we're moving to the discount plans because the cost difference in the plan exceeds the potential benefit in many...but not all...cases..

Discount cards are not insurance - even though you're paying a premium, you're essentially paying what an insurance would pay for a procedure. It's still not cheap. The medical office I worked for gave a standard 20% discount - which ended up being cheaper than most discount cards.

My advice: call your dentist and ask them what it could cost you to pay out of pocket and if there was any discount. Then figure out which way would be cheaper - their standard discount, or the discount card plus the premium.
