Dispute with insurers re home contents policy .?
Home contents insured through Lloyds TSB, including valuables, however, have lost a valuable gold ring given as a gift by late husband. Value at the time, approximately 20 years ago was around £800 but insurers are refusing to pay out as there is no receipt!! Anyone out there got any advice as to how to take this forward?

If you don't have a receipt then they will make life difficult!
Did you ever have it valued, repaired or looked at by a jewellers at any point- they may have records. Failing that, supplying a photo of the ring or you wearing it may be helpful. Don't give up just yet but make a point of taking photos of anything else relevant for future security- this could turn out to be an expensive mistake. I really hope you get this sorted.

welcome news
The first thing to do is to write a letter of complaint (procedural details are in your policy document) outlining the circumstances and asking for a reasonable settlement (probably contact a jeweller and see if they can guestimate the value of a ring worth £800 20 years ago today). Point out that you think that they are not treating you fairly as it is unreasonable to expect a receipt to be available under these circumstances. (Pleas use the words 'treating' and 'fairly').

They have to acknowledge the complaint in 7 days, give you a reply within 28 and a final reply 28 days.

If not happy you can then take your case to the Financial Ombudsman Service (details will be provided in the final letter you receive from the company)

dont let it drop!.. it was given as a gift so they have to acknowledge that.. they will try anything not to pay up... i had it out with barclays the other week and i won!.. write to the customer services and complain that they are not treating you as a valued customer properly.. tell them that as it was a gift given, and althought you know its value you have no reciept and cant get one from a deceased person and if they can them blooming well they should try.. sock it to them in a stiff no nonsence letter.. they will back down they are just being plain ignorant... people die all the time.. call their bluff

My mum lost her wedding ring, and the insurer sent her a voucher for the value, I dont understand why they wont pay you, its a common item in any house, surely it would be covered?

The only reason maybe that you had to list jewellery alueables which were over a certain amount? and you didnt list it? Thats the only thing I can think of. You need to dig out a copy of your policy and read the small print

... If you want insurance for those items they are called "scheduling" .. Each piece is appraised -- photographed and insurance is sold that way.... Have the sales rep come and discuss what they want to schedule jewerly -- or any thing else that is valuable... ..

Have you tried contacting the jeweller who sold you the ring they might have records? alternatively has it every been listed on any legal documents i.e wills bank statements? the only other way of proving the ring existed is through photos,Try and find photos of you wareing the ring, especially if they can be dated (this might at least give you some evidence of having the ring!) and if there a nice clear picture of the ring try and get a jeweller to give you a valuation. These insurer just want to get out of paying there all to keen to take you premium but hate giving any thing back! it would also be worth seeing the citizen advise beauro there can give you free advise or a solicitor, good luck i hope you get payed out!

Although these companies don't or wont admit it, they quite often refuse to pay out immediately for spurious reasons. They wait for the customer to complain (saves them a fortune as most people don't try again) There is no reason for you to have kept a receipt as it was a gift. The policy covers valuables so go back to them again and do not accept their answer or any monies from them until such time as you are satisfied with the cash payout. Meanwhile, have the ring valued and get a written valuation for it. Send a copy with your complaint to the ombusdsman and a copy to the insurance company. Cowboys the lot of them!
