xynder777 | Do I need a non-owner's insurance policy? |
I am going to sell my vehicle soon. I will no longer need car insurance. Do I need to purchase a "non-owners" policy? I know that when I eventually do buy another car + insurance, they ask how long you have been "continually insured," and if I dump coverage altogether, I'll have to indicate that there was a period that I had no insurance (even though I had no car), which will probably increase my rates. |

Typically non-owned auto policies are only written for people who have a car regularly furnished to them and they do not own their own car. In my entire career I think I only wrote two. If you are not going to have a car that is owned by someone else to use every day then you likely don't need the policy, though it's wise to understand that you can still be held liable for damages/injuries you cause driving someone else's car.
Many insurers do not penalize you for time you don't own a car as long as you provide proof of insurance up to the date you sold the old car, the bill of sale proving the date you sold the old car, and a buyer's order or bill of sale for the new car showing there was no trade-in.
As long as you keep good records and provide them to the insurer you should be fine. But make sure you call for quotes before you actually buy the new car, as you will have to get coverage bound before you pick it up since you won't have an automatic extension of coverage from another car. |

it depends...how long is it going to be before you get another car? if it will be relatively quick, then yes, i would suggest keeping a non owners policy in force. if its going to be awhile, then the cost of keeping a policy in force may negate the discount you get for continuous coverage. and to the above....THERE IS SUCH A THING AS NON OWNERS POLICY. I write them all the time. |

if you frequently drive other peoples vehicles or want that peace of mind you can purchase a non-owners policy. plus, if you were to get into an accident it would provide medical coverage (if you have it). this coverage would take over after the car owner's policy coverage paid to its' limits.
if you do not own a car that is a "no need", so the insurance co. should not surcharge you or put you in a higher tier because of that. just let them know you did not have a vehicle titled in your name when you purchase the policy, hence the lapse in coverage. however, you will not get the discount for having continuous insurance.
so if you do drive someone else's vehicle often it may be something to look into. if you drive every so often or use public transit most of the time i wouldn't worry about it too much. |

Some companies penalize you for non continuous coverage and some do not. I would suggest changing your policy to a non-owned vehicle policy in case you do drive other cars.
It makes it easier later when you do buy another car to just call your agent to change the non-owned vehicle policy to your new car. |

Are you going to be driving? If you have no car to drive, and no member of your household has a car to drive, then MAYBE that named nonowner policy will work for you. But if you are buying your new car within the next 45 days, you should just keep your old policy in effect, for two reasons:
1. if you lapse for more than 30 days, you'll be high risk, and that named nonowner policy won't count for coverage and
2. the short rate cancellation penalty for cancelling, will be more expensive than carrying the insurance with no car for less than 45 days. |

There is no such thing as "non-owner's auto insurance." |
