Veronica M | Do I need disability insurance? I'm only 33!? |
I have a medical practice, I'm a nurse practitioner. I have heard that disability insurance is a great idea, especially if you are an individual business owner, which I am. I just don't know if I should. I'm in great shape, 33, non-smoker, healthy lifestyle, etc... Has anyone purchased disability insurance and can give me advice? I just don't want to waste my hard earned money. |

At the age of 30 the odds of becoming disabled for more than 90 days or more are 1 in 3.
When you are younger most are more active which increases the chances of accidents.
A 30 year old male is 4 times more likely to become disabled than he is likely to die.
Here's a question for you:
How much is your house worth? $100,000? $500,000 maybe?
Do you have insurance on it? most do without question!
Odds of a house fire are 1 in 220
How much is your car worth?
Do you have insurance on it? Most do without question!
Odds of getting in a car crash are one in 82 (further, in that car accident who is going to be driving...likely you...what are the odds of you being injured in an accident wehre you are driving? probably pretty high I would guess)
Now calulate how much you are worth? How much money do you earn in lets say 3 months? What if the injury last a couple years? or worse year a life time? You could have a financial loss of litterally millions of dollars?
Odds of becoming disabled are 1 in 3
Even beyond lost wages, if you have to take 3 month off from your business, who is going to run it while you are gone? Are you actually going to have a business to do back to if you're off for a year? Disabiltiy insurance can help you maintain your household bills and possibly find someone to maintain your business as well (take out a personal policy to cover your household expenses, and a policy owned by your business to cover your business expenses to make sure you have a job to come back to...this is known as Business Overhead Expenses Insurance)
If you are healthy, most types of insruance (critical illness, disability, long term care) would be fairly cheap for you,why not hedge your bets a little?
You're best bet for finding a disability insurance policy is to contact a broker in your area and discuss it with them. Disability insurance is fairly complex with elimination periods and benefit periods and occupation codes and such. A broker can find out what you want, and then find you the best options available. |

What happens if you slip and fall on the ice next week and shatter the bones in your leg and you're out of work for six months, including some expensive physical therapy and rehab?
That's why people need disability insurance. |

Can you pay your bills if you are hurt and can't work? For how long?
If you can't pay your bills (mortgage, food, electricity, internet), then you need to have disability income insurance.
Go meet with several agents. make sure they have experience in Disability insurance.
Good Luck

Everyone needs disability insurance. I bet you have life insurance. There is a 1 in 300 chance you will need the life inusrance before age 50. There is a 1 in 30 chance you will need disability before age 50.
As a small business owner, you have a lot of options.
Individual Disability
Business Overhead Disability (covers your salary and office expenses)
Group Disability (assuming you have employees)
I sell insurance and rarely sell disability (I specialize in group benefits). You need to talk to someone who gets 75% or more of their annual income from disability premiums. It really is a speciality and you need to talk to someone who gets it, not an insurance salesman who just wants to make another commission. |

I have had disability insurance since I was 18, it is more than a good idea, it is something that nobody should turn down if offered.
You never know what could happen to you, despite your good health! |

I have serious doubts about whether this is a serious question, a doctor not knowing whether he needs disablity insurance? Of course you need a disablity insurance plan. In fact, as a doctor, you should pay to get one that has a rider, which guarantees that if you ever become disabled and can no longer practice the medicine you do now, you should never have to work again.ie: if you are a surgeon, you will not have to become an internist if the disability is only to your hand. |

Are you serious? At our age statistically speaking your disability insurance is more valuable than your life insurance! The odds of disability are MUCH higher than death at your age. And you have SUBSTANTIAL income to protect. Seek a carrier who specializes in "White Collar" disability policies. Big difference between insuring a carpenter for disability income vs a medical professional. You insure all of your major assets right? YOU are your biggest asset. Get this policy NOW! |

What you should get is Whole Life Insurance with a disability rider. This way, your policy gains cash value, and if you were to become disabled, you would be able to receive benefits. |
