Do I need maternity coverage?
my husband and I plan to start trying to conceive in about a year and a half from now. we're about to purchase health insurance for the first time and want to know if we should get maternity coverage now or wait until its closer to the time that we'll need it. It makes a pretty big difference in the monthly premium estimate...from about $200 to $300.

All insurance companies have a waiting period before they will cover maternity. Most have a 12 month wait but it can vary from 9 months to 21 months.

None of the companies in my area will allow you to add maternity after the policy is issued.

I consider maternity to be a forced savings plan with individual policies. All individual policies in my state cover complications of pregnancy even if they don't have maternity. Say you do conceive 18 months from now. The baby will be born 27 months from now. 27 months times $300 per month is $8100, which is more than a normal delivery and prenatal care in my area. You can save the money in your own savings account or work out a prepayment plan with your doctor and come out ahead.

your best bet is to call the insurance company and ask them. pregnancy cant be denied for pre-existing under HIPAA.

Zarnev is correct-IF you have a pregnancy with no complications--that's why they call it insurance! Buy it now!

Get the maternity coverage. The purpose of any insurance is to pay for something that you can't afford on your own. A typical pregnancy can cost anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000. That's not to mention the cost if you have serious complications which could land you in bankruptcy. Get the coverage because you can't cover it yourself.

Also, you can't be certain that you won't turn up pregnant sooner than planned. At that point, you would be S.O.L. because no insurance company would insure you as an individual at that point (though group plans may be an option).

Two things to keep in mind once your little one is born are:

1. Get an estate plan--will, living will, durable power of attorney, healthcare power of attorney. It's cheap online and absolutely necessary.

2. Get more life insurance on both of you--term insurance is very inexpensive now and if you're healthy, it's dirt cheap. Use an agent who represents a number of companies for the best price. You'll want to apply for coverage before the end of your first trimester because you are less likely to get their best rates after that. A good rule of thumb is that once you've decided to start trying, go get some insurance just in case you have a complicated pregnancy that insurance companies would shy away from. I remember my wife was "ridered" on a policy that would not cover her pregnancy because she was "high risk". Luckily things turned out fine.

Best of luck and don't worry about the $100 a month difference. That's a pittance compared to daycare, preschool, and college!!!!!!!!

Get it now. Usually there's a year wait before you can put in a claim.

Another option is to purchase an HSA plan and deposit up to $5800 in the account, paying for the birth with tax free funds. One way or another you will pay for the birth, so doing it this way may be the least expensive.
