Fissure | Do I really need health/Catastrophe insurance |
I just graduated college and recently got a job. I have to work there for 3 months before I can get their insurance. Well after having countless arguments with my father on insurance I have come here to ask you fine folks.
I do not see the point in getting insurance for 3 months I would rather take my chances. And besides the points the F*cking crooks at the insurance offices will prolly screw me over anyways even if something does happen to me. My dad is telling me I have my head up my A** and is saying Im young and foolish. So do you guys think that I need this insurance for 3 months? And if I do can you reccomend the cheapest ins. I can get? Thank you for your time. |

Your dad is correct and you are young and as naive as he is telling you that you are.
Also, being young and naive you don't understand that those 'crooks' you're referring to help people from having to file bankruptcy, sell their homes, and otherwise become destitute for the rest of their lives because they provide the dollars so that you don't have to. Being financially successful requires being financially responsible. It'll cost maybe $200-$300 to cover all three months.
I'm invincible as well and broke my wrist in the spring. It would have been $10,000 out of my pocket, but since I had proper insurance I should actually come out ahead because the health insurance covered the majority of the cost and my disability policy pays me a check for non-disabling injuries. So thank goodness for crooks.
So yes, the answer to your question is NO, you don't go without insurance for just one day. I know of a young kid that got hit by a drunk driver and is in a wheel chair and has a round the clock nurse. Not cheap and he had no insurance.
You can get some quotes here and if you're feeling invincible then get a high deductible and it'll cost hardly anything...I have links to 6 different carriers...

PS And, I almost forgot...being young you should find out what the cost is through the company. I just met with a guy that was barely 30 paying almost $500/month because he worked for a company with a very senior staff. So, unless you want to pay for the older, unhealthy folks make sure the plan is competitive. Indiviudal insurance can be just as good as group and is usually a fraction of the cost. Group is only cheaper when the company is picking up the majority of the tab. So, if that's the case buy the temporary policy and look to get your own coverage. |

I understand what your dad is saying, but most people think that the castastrophe insurance is the "traditional way" to go when you have a lapse of coverage. Basically, you need something for just in case, and for that, I recommend a discount program. It works well for short term or long term, and in the event of a catastrophic accident, we have an advocacy team that acts on your behalf to negotiate a lower fee and sometimes no fee at all. You can check it out at www.mybenefitsplus.com/trhonda2000.
Hope this helps,

Your father is correct. What will you do if you get a sudden infected appendix about to burst ? (Yes, that can happen at ANY age, and with no warning.) Do you REALLY want to have a $35,000 debt to pay because you cheaped out for 90 days on insurance ? (And yes, that is what the charges will be when you are done with the surgeon, anesthesiologist, hospital charges and more) |

insurance gives you precautions against anything hazardous to you, your father is right you must think about his advice, and as you are young enough your premium will not be big, just search on the net lowest premium |

You're dad is right on this one. I was really young and healthy. Never sick. Then one day I had a little pain on my side. The next day a little worse. Then the next morning I couldn't walk and was being rushed to the hospital. Turns out I had an ovarian tumor the size of a large potato and needed major surgery the next morning. I never expected to need insurance in my 20s but I was so glad I had it! My hospital bills totaled around $50,000 and all I paid out of pocket was about $1,000. I would have owed $50,000 if I hadn't had insurance. No one plans to get sick. That's why there is insurance.
And believe me, I'm a claim adjuster. I know people think that we try to deny claims, but that's really not true. We pay what we owe, no more, no less. |

OK, so, you know that the #1 cause of bankruptcy filings in the US is uninsured medical costs, right?
I personally agree with your dad. But you should talk to his agent, to get a cheap policy - you can probably pick one up for under $100 a month, to cover, say, if you trip down the steps, break your ankle, and need surgery and rehab during that time period (estimated cost, $75,000 if you're uninsured). |

The younger you are when you start the policy, the less it costs you in the long run. Go see an allstate agent or whoever and ask them all the questions you need to. Rates are higher as you get older so you should lock into the best premium you can now. Someday you will be married with children and own your home. You need to start now to set up the protection for your loved ones should anything ever happen to you. What if you get injured and can't work? Medical insurance can run out or not cover all that you need.
Instead of arguing with your father since kids always disagree with the parents until they actually turn into them (trust me you will) go to an expert and get the information. There is even information online for you to look into.
Most companies make people wait 6 months. With the economy changing, some companies will be charging more for the co-payments in the future.
Listen to your dad on this one. He's got a point. |
