Rich is right. LTC insurance is not strictly nursing home coverage. A decent policy will help defray costs of in home care and day care as well as nursing home care.
The reality is nobody wants to go into a nursing home, but sometimes there is no other choice. Without LTC insurance you are self-insuring. This means that if you become sick or injured and need care (whether in your home or elsewhere) you will either be relying on family members or volunteers or paying for the care out of your own pocket (probably both). If you have an extended illness or chronic condition the costs of this care could certainly drain all of your assets.
By purchasing LTCi you are paying a fraction of the potential cost to transfer the risk to an insurance company. You are making the potential future cost of care the insurance company's problem, not yours.
I instruct my clients to begin considering LTCi when they are in their 50s, earlier if there is a significant family or personal history that would suggest they are at a higher risk of needing future care. Find a local agent or financial planner that specializes in long term care insurance. |

First know that Long-Term Care Insurance is not just for nursing homes. It can provide for many different types of care. Here is more on LTC policies: http://www.findlocalinsurance.com/long-term-care.html |

Long term care doesn't apply just to nursing homes. It can also apply to home nursing, medical supplies, etc. So yes, check it out. This keeps you from burdening your children and relatives as you age. |

I am not sure of your age in this matter and it could be case sensitive. If I can suggest, I think that families have to be ready to expect health care to rise in costs. All I can suggest is that you explore all avenues before you make a decision. Remember, you are always allowed to change your mind. |

If you are over 55, you should have LTC insurance. It provides at home and nursing care. The cost of care is very expensive. The cost of LTC insurance is very reasonable usually for way under $100/month. The younger you are, the less expensive your premiums. It's an investment worth having. |

I beleive the odd are 1 in 2 babyboomers will require some kind of long term care. LTC can potentially be very expensive for full service nursing home care. But it's possible to have a nurse come see you for a few hours every day which will cut costs. If you do require long term care in the future, there is definitely a possibility to lose your savings and home with full service care. Here is california, LTC can cost 40-60K/yearthis can take a toll on savings or retirement plans. |
