Daos | Do employers usually fire employees that visit doctors too often (due to the high medical costs )? |
I am originally from Italy and I do not fully understand how health insurance works when it comes to the employer.
When you visit the doctor; does the company that you work for also pay for the doctor visit and medical expenses incurred? If so, wouldn't an employer choose to fire you because of the expenses that you bring to the company with your doctor visits, MRIs, MRAs, X-Ray, Cat scan...etc...etc?
I am in my late 20s and I have recently found out that I have a couple of pretty serious medical conditions that I have to see doctors for. I am literally afraid to have my employer suspect me of having costly serious medical conditions; and I try to schedule appointments far apart to avoid suspicion....[even though I am supposed to go the doctors NOW]
Do employers usually fire employees that visit doctors too often for the fear of the medical costs they will incur? |

Hello my friend from Italy,
America is not a socialist medical society. Your employer pays a standard premium for all of their employees. This is called group insurance. They DO NOT rate each person in the group, they base the premium on the number of insured employees.
The doctors are paid by the Insurance Company with the exception of the copay.
I would not worry about being fired for being sick, you just need to make sure that you get a DOCTORS LETTER EXCUSING YOU FROM WORK EACH TIME YOU GO IN.
If there is anything I can do for you, let me know!

Traditionally, employers helped you pay for medical insurance to a third party insurer who paid your claims.
In this case your claims are between you and the medical provider (who gets paid by the third pary insurer) and your employer knows nothing of your claims.,
However, in recent years, more and more large companies (defined in federal law as those with more than 50 employees) use a law called ERISA (Employee Retirement Income Security Act) to 'self-insure' their employees medical claims. Employees may think it is medical insurance and in many cases the insurance is actually administered by a company with an insurance name, but it isn't really insurance. It's a large employer paying its employee's medical claims.
This does present a problem because now your insurer DOES know all about your medical claims because they are now paying for them.
So, you need to find out from your employer's HR person whether or not your firm is 'self insured' under ERISA or if it buys traditional health insurance.
There are other laws that govern whether or not an employer can fire you for a medical reason (usually not).
What usually happens is that an employer that doesn't want you any more due to high medical claims tries to find some other legitimate reason to get rid of you....like you show up for work 2 minutes late all the time or your surf the internet at work too much.
If you feel you are about to get canned because of your medical claims, you need to make certain you do EVERYTHING by the book as per your job description, then if you are fired, you have a better chance of possibly winning your job back, if you even want it back. |

in australia now youre boss can fire you if there business employes less than 100 people and they dont need a reason for it under the new IR LAWS otherwise if you visit the doctor frequantly and dont claim these on youre medical insurance then youre boss shouldnt have a reason to fire you |

No. If you are visiting doctors often, on your own time, using your health insurance to pay for it, your employer will NEVER KNOW. The medical information does NOT get reported back to the employer.
Your employer does NOT pay anything except the insurance fee. The insurance company pays all the expenses. The employer doesn't incur any extra cost - the insurance company pays for it.
The problem is, if you take lots of time off of work, the employer can fire you for missing work. Unless you arrange to take long lunches, and work late. |

In many states in The United States, employers hire people "at will". This means they can fire anyone for any reason at any time (for the sake of discussion, let's not get the lawyers involved).
In my experience, smaller companies are more concerned about this, since someone with major claims can affect the premiums for the company and/or employees.
When it comes to larger companies, they obviously have the ability to absorb some of those costs given the volume of employees using the service and the premiums being paid.
I hope this help. |

Unless your employer is "SELF INSURED" then they have nothing to do with your medical costs...except paying their share of the premium, which will NOT change for at least the 1st year....and then it increases yearly as does everything else. Your employer can Fire you for missing too much time. Keep the Doctor receipts, because most "Decent" employers will understand as long as you have proof(Receipts) that says you were at the doctors...Plus there is also the Family Medical Leave Act if you need it. You are entitled to time off WITH OUT pay for Medical emergencies involving you or your IMMEDIATE Family |
