seeking knowledge | Do health insurance policies require you to sign a contract with them? |
Can I just go a month with an insurance company and leave them? I ask this becasue I'm looking for an insurance company that would pay for my vasectomy. |

You won't find a private insurance policy that will cover an elective vasectomy. And if its medically necessary, it would be considered a pre-existing condition (unless you've had continuous health insurance without a break in coverage over 63 days).
So, your idea isn't going to work in regard to the vasectomy. Start saving, because you're going to have to pay for the procedure out of pocket. Or else get a job w/health benefits through an employer that would provide coverage for it.
However, to answer your question in general...no, you don't generally sign a contract that requires you to keep a policy for X number of months. Many people use them when they are in-between employer policies and cancel them once the next employer's policy kicks in. (I've done that before myself - kept a private policy for a month or two, just to avoid having a break in coverage.) You do sign a contract, of course...the insurance policy itself is a contract between you and the insurance company. But a privately purchased policy you can generally cancel, even if its just after a month or two.
Also, keep in mind that a person who signs up for a policy for a month just to have an expensive procedure done and then cancels is going to be subject to a lot of scrutiny. The insurer will request medical records to see if you lied about your medical history on your application or anything else that might make your policy invalid. |

Every insurance policy is a contract... a unilateral contract. However, there is nothing in these contracts that stipulate how long you have to stay with them.
However, most health policies don't cover vasectomies unless they are medically necessary. Has your doctor said you need a vasectomy or you will suffer other health consequences? And no, having another kid to drive you crazy is not a valid health consequence! ;-) Elective surgery is rarely if ever, covered. So, if you are buying the insurance to cover a vasectomy just because you want one, you may be disappointed when the insurer will not cover the claim.
Buy the health insurance policy because you need a health insurance policy, not because you want to cover one specific issue. |

Individual insurance usually does not cover elective procedures. But let's say they do...
If you DO disclose your intention to get elective surgery upfront, you won't be approved for a policy.
If you DON'T disclose your intentions upfront, yet get elective surgery anyway within a month, one of two things will happen. You will either not have the costs covered. Or, if they cover them, they will report you to the MIB. You will then have trouble getting covered by ANY policy in the future (if you don't know what the MIB is, please see: http://www.health-insurance-low-cost.net/Medical-History.htm)
All insurance has a 3-month probationary period, meaning one must be on their best behavior, or risk having their policy terminated. I wouldn't test an insurance company on this point.
Why don't you consult with a local medical school? If you're willing to go under the knife with a supervised graduate student, you can obtain your surgery at substantially lower prices than a typical doctor's office. |

Yes, you can go just a month on an individual policy, but most private policies aren't going to pay for that vasectomy.
Many group policies will, but you can't cancel coverage until your next open enrollment, or a qualifying event. |

Yes, you will have to sign a contract. The contract usually is on a month to month basis. If you don't pay they don't cover. What happens if you have complications after the operation? If it is a good company and you leave and want to come back later you will not be accepted again. What you are asking is to pay for the policy long enough to have an operation? That does not seem right. But you will have to be approved by the company first. Find out if the company will pay for such an operation before paying for your first month. If the agent knows this is what you plan to do they will not cover you. A group plan would be best for you because the rates are less sometimes and you will have good coverage. |

You normally don't have to sign a contract. You may have to be with them for awhile before they pay for something like that. Usually you have a copay and deductible which you have to meet before they pay anything. It may actually be cheaper just to pay for it yourself. I am not sure what it cost to get a vasectomy. But once you pay the three or four hundred a month for the insurance and then the four or five hundred for the deductible. (some plans even have a higher deductible) it may be cheaper for you to pay for it. |
