Is this the only car on the policy? If so and you cancel you may loose any 'accident forgiveness' provision on your policy. Also, if you reapply for another policy, they'll consider your recent accident in the rating factor. You'll also need your insurance for any rentals, borrowed cars w/o insurance or any other driving you may do. If you don't plan on purchasing a replacement car, you can switch your coverage to a non-owners policy. This will keep you legal for any driving you do on uninsured vehicles and is cheaper than a standard policy.

If there are multiple cars on the policy, you should be safe to cancel once a title transfer is complete.

Are you going to cancel the plates on the car, or get another one? Are you going to use a rental or other substitute vehicle? If you are going to cancel the plates and go carless, just tell them to cancel the policy the day AFTER the accident. They should backdate it.

If you're getting another car, keep paying it.

If you let your insurance lapse for 30 days or more, you have to apply for a new policy, and there could be "issues" with having a lapse. Also, if you "let" it cancel rather than cancel it the day after the accident, you're subject to cancellation penalties. Those get waived in most cases, if the car is totalled.

FOR YOUR OWN PROTECTION: You should keep Insurance on the car until the Title has been transferred out of your name.
All-in-all this is a full-out waste of money as the chances of something happening are near impossible. BUT, if something bizarre were to happen (somehow the car rolls down a hill and hits parked cars, or something else right out of an insurance commercial) you could be liable. That would leave you holding the bag with no protection from insurance.
The title transfer should take no time at all once the car has been totaled-out, and as soon as you have confirmation in hand the car is no longer in your name you can drop the insurance on it. What you'll end up paying for insurance will only be a couple of bucks.
Even if you do not plan on getting another car, I would try to keep insurance on yourself because it can be very difficult to obtain auto insurance at a good rate if you don't have it.

You only need to have been insured on the day the accident happened in terms of having it covered. As far as whether you need to keep insurance, every state has different rules. For instance New York considers you the owner of a car until you turn in the tags.

I wipe my own @$$
nope, not unless you are driving another car.

Cancel coverage back to the day after the wreck.

No. Your insurance coverage is as of the date of loss. Cancel your insurance now making sure to request an offset for anything paid for after the insurance company was informed your car was a total loss (if you in fact informed them of this fact). What you do not want to have happen is for the insurance company to cancel you for failure to pay which can be coded differently and could affect future insurance premiums when/if you get another car and insure it.
