Yes it is a necessity. The main benefit is that it covers your medical fees overseas, should you fall sick or met with an accident. It usually also comes with benefits like flight delay, baggage lost or delay, flight cancellation, lost of personal items, etc. Please make sure you understand the terms and conditions of these benefits as well. Basically, you need paper proof in order to claim all these, eg police report if your camera is stolen, airline written notice if the flight is cancelled or hospital receipt if you are hospitalised.

You don't need holiday insurance but believe me that it is a good idea, and it's relatively cheap.
If you have a credit card you may already have it. Check with the card company.

It's recommended.

Two weeks before my father left on a trip to Disney World, he was diagnosed with cancer and the doctor recommended he cancel his trip, which was paid for.

He had to get a letter from his doctor verifying the diagnosis. He did, and received a 100% refund. Yes, you need the insurance.

old know all
So where are you from and where are you going?

Travel insurance covers:
1) Cancellation - if a relative dies or you are injured. You might feel the risk is small enough not to bother.
2) Medical expenses - If you live in the UK or Ireland and are travelling to the EU or Switzerland, get a EHIC, http://www.ehic.org It's free and gives you the same health benefits you enjoy at home. If you're travelling elsewhere, insurance is a must.
3) Loss of luggage and personal effects. Check with your parents home contents insurance. Personal items are usually covered worldwide.
4) Loss of money or credit cards. If you can manage without this at home, do you need it on holiday. (You do if you plan to get drunk)

You really should get travel insurance because if something happens to you abroad you could find yourself in serious difficulty. Hopefully nothing will go wrong but don't take that chance for the sake of a few quid! Your luggage could be lost, you could get mugged (God forbid) and have all your money stolen, you could get injured and need hospital treatment which you would have to pay for if you did not have insurance. You should cover yourself for all eventualities, it's just not worth the risk. Try moneysupermarket.com or comparethemarket.com to get a good price for travel insurance, for a week away you'll be able to get travel insurance for less than £20.
