Wayne F | Do i need public liability insurance |
I am self employed in a consultancy role, however the main contractor has asked me to operate a crane on there behalf. I am qualified to drive the crane and am happy to do so, but do i require my own Public liability or any other insurance? |

You certainly need to make sure you are covered.
Before just rushing out and buying it though, might be worth checking that you aren't covered by the main contractors insurance. You may be if you are acting on their behalf.
However, regardless of how much you trust the main contractor, DON'T just take their word for it (it's too serious a matter to risk a misunderstanding), get a copy of the policy. make sure you are happy and then call the insurer yourself to double check. Explain what you will be doing and get them to confirm that you are covered. Make a note of the date, time and person you spoke to.
Just think it's worth checking before you fork out hard earned unnecessarily. |

Yes, you will more than likely need Public Liability Insurance.
The majority of builders that use subcontractors normally request that you have your own cover in place, a minimum of £1 million Public Liability would normally suffice, but best to talk to your employer to ensure you have the required cover. The only problem you may encounter is in connection with the crane operation. Due to the nature of the job it is deemed a higher than normal risk, with some companies choosing not to provide cover.

If your employed in a consultancy role why would you be operating a crane. Well suppose if you are self employed and being sub contracted then suppose your public liability would need to cover you. |

Ask the main contractor if you're covered under their insurance policy first. If so, get sight of the insurance certificate to make sure it is current and contact the insurer direct to ensure you are fully covered. You definitely need Public Liability insurance and the policy may well include it already, so ask.
If not, you can find out more about Public Liability insurance at http://www.coverzones.com/policies/public-liability-insurance |

Put it this way - you'd be mad not to get a good liability insurance. |

Yes, both public and insurance to cover the operation of the crane. |
