There is some considerable difference between what you will get if you claim for the broken laptop on your home insurance versus a specialist computer insurer or the insurance that comes with one of those extended warranties sold with the computer at point of sale.
And even then, the difference between insurers on those three types of insurance hugely vary as well!
This is such a specialised question that you'll have to actually check out the small print of your current home insurance. If it lacks good monetary reward (or has a high excess) then you'll need to:
a) look at specialist computer equipment insurers if you have already purchased the laptop.
b) ask about the extended warranty insurance from the retailer you plan on buying the laptop from.

You'll get a like for like replacement based on the spec of the laptop. Let me put it to you this way, if your original laptop cost £800 and had a steam engine but today's laptops run on a diesel engine, you're not going to get an upgrade from steam to diesel just because it cost the same - you'll get steam for steam. Hope that makes sense.

Some companies will insist on paying the money to the shop so you can't spend it elsewhere.
