Christine | Do learning drivers need to be insured? |
I have my permit-- do I need some kind of policy, or does my parents' car insurance cover me as well? Their worry is that if I have a crash I won't be insured and the money will come out of their pockets. Or am I okay? |

MOST states, and most policies, allow a permitted driver to be covered without being listed, until they get their license.
HOWEVER, we don't know what state you are in, or which company is insuring your parents. A FEW companies insist that even permitted, not yet licensed, household members be listed as operators on their policies, in order to be covered - and the state insurance commissioners back them up.
SO, to find out FOR SURE if you need to be listed or not, call your parents' agent and ask. |

You are okay...when my daughter got her permit, I called my insurance and they told me that she doesn't need coverage till she gets her LICENSE. I just called because she got her license last month and they told me, I didn't have to contact them.
When she passed her Driver's test, the state sent a copy to my insurance company.
You are automatically covered with a Learner's Permit!
I Live in Florida...
GOOD LUCK! |

You should be insured under your parents. Have them check their policy for secondary drivers. |

Just had this arise at my house too. I called my agent and in Georgia, insurance follows the CAR not the person. So anyone, given permission to drive my car, as long as they have a license or a permit, are covered on my policy.
Free ad for them : Allstate is as good as the say, a few dollars higher at first, but with good driver discounts and renewal premium drops, i am about 20% lower now than any discount insurance company. plus i have almost a 0 dollar deductable on full coverage.
and no I dont work for them :P |

Your parents need to contact their insurance agent and let them know that you now have a learner's permit.
In Indiana, with All State insurance, I was told that my insurance premiums won't go up while my son has his learner's permit, but they do need to know that he's driving. As soon as he gets his license, I have to let All State know, and at that time I'll have to start paying premiums to add him to my coverage. |

well, I would think that you are covered under your parents policy but you should be with them in case of an accident not by yourself... One you are a legal driver you can get a policy with your parents or go out and get your own...
But I would definitely ask your insurance agent...Some policies are different than others... |

you are probably covered by their policy. also without a car you can only get a personal liability insurance policy and most likely dont need it. be careful when driving. |

yes because if you crash-which i hope you won't- someone still has to pay for it |

you are covered under who ever owns the car. Its the same weather you have a Jr. license, Sr. license or permit. If the owner of the car is under insured if you have an accident, then you both are equally liable. Make sure you follow the permit restrictions or else you will not be completely covered in an accident. |

Yes, you have to have insurance in most states. It is a state by state scenario, and it also depends on your parent's insurance company if it includes you or not. You should be able to call your local departement of motor vehicles for the answer in your state.
In pennsylvania, learners permits DO require insurance. |
