Recently I deeded over an inherited home to my brother and myself as joint-tenants. My brother is paranoid-schizophrenic.
Will we pay higher higher home insurance because one owner is mentally-ill? Can the insurance company even refuse or cancel our insurance?

Your insurance will not be higher. Mental health has no bearing on your insuarance premium and mental health is not considered a risk. Your homeowner's insurance can't be denied, canceled or nonrenewed due to mental health or physical health issues either. |

Have never heard of any home Insurance Company ask if a person is mentally ill . Did they ask you if you drank and smoked? I don't think so. |

The mental capacity of the owner has no bearing upon the insurance. What will determine if you pay a higher premium or are denied insurance is if either of you have any history of homeowner claims. |

No, insurance companies can't charge higher rates. It won't affect anything, as any damage done by the owner of the premises, your brother, won't be covered, ANYWAY.
You MIGHT pay higher rates if the house is non-owner occupied. You WILL need to change the homeowners policy to reflect the new ownership, and the first named insured MUST be living in the house, for a homeowners policy.
Now, if the first named insured has a rotten credit score, that WILL affect rates and/or eligibility. But that's a different issue from the mental illness. |

I'm sure it's possible. Before I started working in the auto insurance industry, I never would have dreamed that someones education could affect the rate you pay, but it does. |
