Do most car insurance policies cover both operator and the main driver of the car?
Do most car insurance policies cover both the operator of the car and the main driver the insurance policy is under?
As long as the drivers are listed on the policy there is coverage. It doesn't matter who drives the car more often or less often. Only when someone is driving the car and not listed on the policy, or they are an excluded driver, is there a problem when a claim is filed.
Also, a good resource is this one...

Take care.

you insure the auto not the driver. if the person driving lives in your home you must list them as a driver to be covered. if you loan it to a friend who does not live in your home it covers them as long as they are licensed and not specifically excluded from the policy.

All drivers that live in your home do need to be listed on the policy or excluded. If excluded then there is no coverage because they should not be driving the vehicle. If some one is living in your home and they are not listed and there is a loss once. When the insurance company finds out, there may still be coverage for that loss, but it will be reported to underwritting to make sure there is a correction.
One last note, Say your Mother is visiting you for the weekend. She wants to got to the store but her car is blocked in. You let her take your car one time ever. She rearends someone. You have one insurance company insuring the veh and she carries a different insurance company for her own vehicles. In some states and some policies it states that there are guidelines for other insurance. This means both insurance companies may have to pay part of the loss. It gets confussing but there would be some kind of coverage.

Most car policies insure the car, and the drivers listed on the policy.
To say "the insurance follows the car and not the driver" isn't at all precise. You have to list all household members on the policy, and all regular users, for them to be covered.
And of course, if you own more than one car, and you only insure one, the others are all UNINSURED, even while YOU are driving them.
