Insurance is one of those things that seems like a waste of money until you actually need it. I wouldn't be able to sleep at night if I didn't have adequate homeowners, auto and health insurance. I have life insurance on both my husband and myself to cover at least 2 1/2 years wages.
My homeowners insurance will cover the replacement value of my home and contents and pay for me to stay somewhere else while it is being rebuilt.
My auto insurance covers me for liability and the current value of my car plus I have additional coverage for uninsured or underinsured motorists. Because you never know....I might get clobbered by one of those people who think that they don't need much insurance.
Health insurance is important, again because you never know...
We have life insurance on each other because in addition to being able to pay all the end of life stuff like funerals (expensive) We have debt obligations that require both incomes. If something were to happen to my husband and I didn't have life insurance I would be unable to pay my debts. With the life insurance I won't have to worry. |

I believe in insuring like you're going to die tomorrow, and investing like you're going to live forever. And more importantly, avoiding debt.
For me, personally, the grownups have term life in my house. We have auto, homeowners, and an umbrella - but no flood policy (and yes, we're in a flood zone). We have medical insurance - I HEAVILY believe in the best medical plan you can afford, especially if you have children. We have disability coverage, but only through work. We have life insurance through work, in addition to the private term insurance, but don't think about it in our long term planning. We have 401K's and IRAs - self directed - and a savings account.
There is such a thing as being "insurance poor" - spending SO much for insurance, that you can't save any money on your own. Just like everything else, there needs to be a balance. But if all you're going to do with the extra money you would have spent on insurance is eat it (take out food/restaurants) or wear it (clothes) or drive it (newer, fancier car, which is a depreciating asset and a stupid investment), then that's not doing you any long term good, either.
But most people I know who have financial troubles, skip medical and life insurance, don't pay their auto premiums on time, have heavy debts, huge fancy houses, brand new cars - one for every driver - and CANNOT live within their means. They don't do preventative maintenance on the cars or house, or preventative medicine on the people, so they can't catch things early - it's always a HUGE expensive problem. Amusingly enough, I see this more with people with six figure incomes than five - they just spend and spend and spend themselves into bankruptcy. No, you DON'T need a new car every four years, and a Ford Focus gets you to the grocery store just as well as a Porsche. |
