Do you have life insurance or, is it wise to even have life insurance?
I don't have any life insurance. When I die, I want it to be a real tragedy

Ultrastooge B.O.
When you die I can burn down your house with your body in it and bury the whole thing in a shoe box for just $13.85... I will make it all look like an accident so I can collect the $100,000,000,000,000 insurance policy I took out against you and fix the US economy. That's what I call a tragic finale.

I'm guessing you have zero family. Having life insurance insures that my family will be able to pay for the funeral services, and have money left over to sustain they're current way of living. I wouldn't want my husband to be so overwhelmed with bills and debt, that he couldn't continue to maintain our home for our kids. Dealing with a death is hard enough, I wouldn't want my family to struggle financially too.

Yes, because my wife, my 2 year old daughter, and my unborn son all rely on my income for basic necessities like housing and food. I want people to cry when I die, but I don't want it to be because my family is homeless.

Well, I guess you could have death insurance. That might suit you better.

If you are married and have a home mortgage, you should have some form of life insurance that will allow your surviving spouse (and children, if applicable) to continue paying for the property as though your income was still coming in. Insurance companies have exact formulas as to how much insurance you should have for your particular financial situation.

Another decision is whether to have whole life or term insurance. With term insurance, you pay a monthly premium based on your age, your health (like whether you smoke or not), and how much the policy is for. This can increase each year as you get older. When you die, the money is paid to the designated beneficiary. If you terminate the policy, it has no value.

With whole life insurance, you pay a higher premium, but it does not change during the lifetime of the policy. Also, the money you pay goes into some kind of an investment account. As you pay more premiums and that account grows, it eventually gets to the point where the investment provides a yield that they partially return to you. This is then applied toward your premium in the form of either more coverage or lower premiums.

At some point, you can actually get money back from the insurance company each month instead of paying premiums (some percentage of the investment return pays your premiums and they give the extra to you). If at some point you wish to terminate the policy, you will then get some percentage amount of the money invested back. In the first few years of the policy, this is negligible. But, if it's an older plicy, this return can be substantial. However, you no longer have the life insurance.

With a whole life insurance policy, the amount of money you pay in premiums gives a substantially smaller return than if you were to just invest it yourself on the open market. However, you don't have the security of the insurance policy that pays your beneficiary a large sum of money upon your death.

I am a young single male with no kids, so I really don't have a traditional need for insurance. However, as someone that fully understands how insurance works beyond the "when you die there is money" thing.

I have a fairly substantial whole life policy (worth far more than I'm worth today) that is there as a tax shelter/retirement fund top up. As a young entreprenuer, I am very confident that I will have a large estate when I pass away and I also plan on having an enjoyable retirement. I personally am baffled how someone can work for 40-50 years with the intentions of living sheltered/restricted lifestyle when they're done and saying I'll only need 75% or 50% of my income becuase I won't do as much. I want to enjoy my retirement and be able to do the things I want to do, not the things I let my self do because of budget. A whole life policy is one of very few legal tax shelters that are endorsed by the Canadian government (and possibly other countries as well...don't know what other countries do)

Aside from that I want to make sure my kids and family (when I get that going...) are taken care of and I want to be able to leave something behind for a charity (If I don't have kids of a wife when I get married, that's where it will all go). I've always been the share the wealth type and a "giver", so why not help some people out. It's a lot easier to get up in the morning and sleep a lot easier knowing that you are doing some good with your life and that the people you care about are safe.

Some people are firm beleivers that "Why do I care, I'll be dead?". It's tough to change that, but I will say 2 things about that. #1 Glad I don't know you personally becuase I feel sorry for those that will be screwed by your lack of empathy. #2 It's unfortunate that people have such a negative "me, me, me" attitude in life. Life to Give and Pay it Forward is the way to be...

I have life insurance. I am the center of my childrens' world, so it will be a tragedy when I die, at least to them, but it won't financially ruin my family.
