You do not have to go to college to become an insurance agent. All you need to do is pass your local insurance exam. There are different ones for different types of insurances whether it's property and casualy or life or health.
Having some kind of business background would be very beneficial. Taking a business admin degree with a major in finance will definately help. Most insurance agents are independent and building their own buisness, so having a knowledge of how to build a business is essential. Most companies don't teach that.
For gadfly...why do you feel that an insurance agent is not a real career? A successful agent can make a substantial amount of money, it is very rewarding being able to present a widow or terminally ill person with a substantially sized check to make sure they are able to live comfortably through difficult time and not every 'moron' can sell insurance well and properly explain it...many don't fully understand it because their company doesn't train them properly or only focuses on one very small and misleading strategy. Any 'moron' can get into the industry, but not everyone will last. That's why 9 out of 10 people fail in this industry within the first year..becuase it's not easy. If you are the type that feels sales is not a 'real career', you should get a better education my friend. If it wasn't for sales people your career and company would not exist. It doesn't matter what industry you are in. Whether you are in medicine, law, automotive industry, food industry, a steel mill or any kind of corporate office job, salesmen were involved in created that industry. If not for directly selling the products made by that company, they were involved in selling the tools needed to run that business (IE: medical equipment, accounting software, office supplies, manufacturing equipment, whatever). |

No. You have to go to school. Some courses are self study, others you have to attend in person. Then you have to take and pass a state licensing exam. You will usually have to have a credit check, and pass a criminal background check. You are not allowed by law to solicit or give advice on life insurance for a company until you are licensed and have that license in hand. |

For this, you can sign up for online classes or actual classes to complete the mandatory hours.

But nowadays, insurance industry is a highly regulated field by the government. Insurance companies are known as the custodian of people's money. Because of that, the insurers and its advisers are regulated and have to follow strict compliance guidelines.
To be an insurance agent in this era, you may be require to study taxation, financial planning, statistics, etc to acquire a special licence that authorize you to give insurance advise (this is so, in Australia).
Even real estates agents are required to get a licence before operating.

No. But it could be helpful. If you have a degree in Insurance Sales, Insurance companies will pay you a higher commission percentage. Most Insurance companies offer exclusive training with their company. |

Hi, it is compulsory to undergo a 100hrs training & a IRDA exam totally which will not cost u more than 500rs. but an agent will be only eligible for commission, not salary. but if u r looking for salary there will be some companies who offer u fixed salary & also u dont have to undergo any IRDA training.
