Do you need to pay for home insurance if you're only RENTING?
This is for a project about future living plans, and I'm not too sure if it's necessary to pay for monthly housing insurance if you're renting an apartment.

Renter's insurance can pay for losses to your belongings, or liablity if you cause major damage to the property or injure someone.

You may be careful, but never know what other tenants may do. I never had issues while renting (except an oven fire contained within the oven of an apartment below me). But after I bought a home, someone in another building at that complex came home at 3 AM, turned on a french frier, and fell asleep. The resulting fire burned out at least 6 apartments. I imagine the occupants of those apartments (and apartment owner) were not too thrilled.

You need renter's insurance if you're renting - not homeowner's insurance.

Soozie Q
Only if you would like to replace your things in case of a fire. If you rent an apartment and have no renter's insurance, and it burns, you will lose all of your furniture, clothes, (everything),and will not be reimbursed for anything. You will have to start all over and pay for it all. Renter's insurance is not that expensive and I would highly suggest getting it.

Yes, you need ins. to cover your property. There is such a thing as renters' ins to cover loss in case of fire, flood, tornado, etc.

Some apartments will require you to carry renter's insurance. Otherwise, it's not required. It's just there to cover your stuff. The building and the walls, etc is all covered through the landlords policy. You just have to worry about your own stuff. They are very cheap. $10-$25 per month for $30,000 in Utah, anyway.

Most apartments require you carry it. It's also a good idea, in case you have a fire at your building - it covers your stuff.

It costs about $10 a month.
