Do you think insurance policies are a waste of money?
i dont mean the ones we all have to have like motor and house insurance. I mean, small insurances for electical goods etc

Insurance is all about risk. Most people will not bother to take warranty insurance on small electrical items as they are prepared to take the risk themselves. There are some people that see these products as worthwhile and insurance companies are simply meeting these needs. What I find distasteful is the way some retailers pressure sell insurance warranties.

depends from who you get your insurance ,if its from the likes of dixons or curries ,they charge a big premium ,you can get better quotes on the internet which bring the cost down

House insurance would have been great when we were burgled. We didn't have a valid policy so lost thousands.

iPod insurance is a must, they always stop working a couple of weeks after the warranty runs out. Phone insurance is good too. I don't generally bother with anything else though.

If you are chosing small insurance for electrical goods over insurances like life and health insurance, then yes, insurances on electrical goods is a waste of money.

I find it interesting that people will insure a $200 ipod, but won't insure themselves that is worth 10's of thousands of dollars more.

My opinion is that if they have to offer an extended warranty on the product they are expecting it to break down, which means it's a peice of junk and not worth buying...

Well it depends. I bought a new dishwasher last year and my four year old threw one of her little toys in the washer and for weeks I kept hearing this annoying rattle. They came out and found a toy part in the pipe for NO charge. I have insurance on the dishwasher until 2011. Once a year they come out and do a maintenance check on my dishwasher.
I think it's just better to buy warranty because you never know. These days they DON'T make things as good as they use too. My farther-in-law has had his washing machine for 24 yrs and he just had to replace it this year. Mine is not even 8 years old before I had to buy another washer and dyer. My refrigerator is acting up and it's not even 10 years old. I didn't get a warranty on it. I wish I had but most warranties are only for 5 years when you buy the product. You have to do what your gut tells you to do!

You mean retail insurance. Its a good idea to purchase retail insurance when buying laptops, or expensive devices that can be stolen easily. For appliances like a microwave, no, its not a good idea to purchase.

Yes I think they are a waste of money

Most of them charge a one time fee for the term of the contract, but the policy has so many exclusions and so many requirements (like keep receipt - register within so many days) that if you tried to make a claim for the contract, you would'nt have the things they required.

It probably would cost you more in time meeting the requirements, and jumping through their hoops, then they wouldn't pay for the item in the end.

My rule of thumb concerning service agreements sold with Sear Appliances is if I buy it I will never use it. If I don't I will wish I had. My wife spent $500 on two one year warranties on out two Air conditioner units last summer in TX. Two weeks later they spent three days at my house fixing the AC at no cost to me. I hate to admit she was right but she was right.

Yes, a complete wast of money.
