Do you trust people who put life insurance on others just before a divorce?
I know a couple of people who got it right along with the divorce. Recommended by the attorney of course. How would you feel if your spouse did this? What would be an acceptable reason for doing such a thing?

An acceptable reason for doing this, would be if you have children you need to provide support for, in case one of the parents dies. The custodial parent, in particular, will need it to replace child support payments ,and help put the kids through school.

It's actually a VERY common arrangement in the child custody part of divorce and separation agreements.

This is common with divorcing couples who have kids. Regardless of how the parents feel about each other, they still love their children and want to make sure they are protected if one of the parents were to die.

I would be pretty freaked out if someone I was divorcing all the sudden wanted life insurance on me. why? you are going you seprate ways this to me is weard. I would be watching my freakin back

From my understanding, you cannot get a life insurance policy on ANOTHER that is not a dependent of yours without their signature. More and more agencies are even requiring the insured individual to come into the office to sign in person, as these signatures can be easily forged.

The entire purpose of this practice is to keep people from getting random policies and collecting them in the event of their untimely death.

Wow, if my husband tried to do that right before our divorce was final, I would contact the police dept and tell them and then get an order for protection asap. OH, and I would tell everyone I knew he was trying to do this and let them know if something happens to me, make sure the B****rd rots in jail!

if you think the other person will die & you will benefit you get the insurance....very suspicious....

If there are alimony payments or child support payments to be made, your attorney is being responsible by suggesting both life insurance and disability so that those payments can continue to be made. This is quite common with children in particular. Just because you're divorced doesn't mean you don't love your kids any less.

In case you're worried about some type of kick back to the lawyer, a practicing lawyer cannot be compensated for insurance.

There is no acceptable reason. The only reason I see for it is greed.

People might say that it's good to get it if the other person is going to be making child support payments, so they want to have insurance to care for the kids in case they die before the divorce is settled. However, if that were the case, then the spouse who was going to be making the payments should be getting the insurance for themselves, not the other spouse getting it for them.

Additional: See, a person down below is using the reason I stated. But it isn't an acceptable reason. In order for it to be acceptable, then the person who would be making the payments should be the one taking it out on themselves. Not the person who would be receiving the payments taking it out on the person who would be making the payments. Since you are speaking of one spouse taking out life insurance on the other spouse, then them saying they are doing it for the children isn't acceptable, it's suspicious.

If taking out life insurance before a settled divorce is for the sake of the children, then both spouse should take it out. And spouse "A" should take it out on spouse "A", and spouse "B" should take it out on spouse "B". Not the other way around.
