Does State Farm homeowners insurace typically cover foundation damage?
I have a big water leak in the basement. Water is leaking from between the flooring and the walls. The house is about 75 years old. Do homeowners policies usually cover fondation damage? I can't find my policy to look. I'd like to have a general knowlegde before I call them during the work week.

Thanks!
Additional Details
Not sure if it matters, but I live in St. Louis, MO.

The insurance will "probably" cover this. HOWEVER, consider carefully before you ask them to fix this problem. A very sad fact of life is that most insurance companies will cancel you after two claims.

They do not cover structural damage, but they will cover losses caused by it,as in your case, any furniture,or dry wall damaged by the water leak.

No. I' ve never seen a policy that covers FOUNDATION damage.

It DOES cover damage to the basement floor that you have to do, to get to a leaking pipe, as long as the leak is under the house. It does NOT cover damage to driveways, if the leak is under the driveway.

But MOST water leaks in basements are from underground water seepage - which is NOT covered. Any idea if it's pipes or seepage?

I work for State Farm, but I am not a claims adjuster. My guess is going to be no. Foundation cracks and water seeping in are generally not covered by homeowner's policies if they are a result of age and wear. This would be considered a maintenance issue and it would be up to you to maintain the home.

Now if you have a broken pipe or something under the house, this could possibly be covered. It's really going to depend on the cause of the seepage. If it's a home maintenace issue, then most likely not.

It all depends on the reason for the seepage and how long it's been going on.

Insurance, as a general rule, covers things that are sudden and accidental in nature (and even some of those are specifically excluded.) For instance, flood damage (that includes any damage from mud slides or ground water seepage) is NOT covered under ANY homeowners policy in the US. In fact, it's mandated that way by the Federal flood insurance program.

I take it you don't have flood insurance? (Most people think they don't need it if they aren't close to a river or lake, but that's simply not true.)

If you don't have flood insurance, it's highly unlikely that you'll have any coverage for this damage, given your description of it (the fact that it happens primarily when it rains heavily implies it isn't a broken pipe, or some other source of a peril covered by homeowners insurance.) You should really call and talk to your agent -- you could try turning in the claim, but expect it to be declined if it's caused by ground water seeping in.
