Does an hourly employee have to be paid for driving time if the company sends them to a seminar?
by workers comp rules, if I am working for my company and they send me to a seminar, should I get paid for travel time?

Workers comp doesn't set the rules for when you should be paid - they set the rules for when a claim is covered.

No, an hourly employee is not entitled to pay for the time he's driving to and from a seminar. If he's in an accident on the way there, it's possible that workers comp could apply, depending on two things: 1. did they leave from work, or home? and 2. what state are they in?

plantguardian
No. Companies may dictate their own policies regarding travel reimbursement, Workers Comp has nothing to do with it. However, if you are injured, you are still on company time doing company approved whatever and Workers Comp would be obligated to pay your medical expenses. Of course, they'd fight it, they always do, but that's the facts of the situation.

Baby Girl Due May 2009!
Um it depends on how far away it is & if it is on company time. I have to go to seminars & classes some times during the week & I just get paid the regular hourly wage that I would get paid if I was at the office. It is about an hour away & I usually have to stay there all day. But if you have a company handbook or something you might want to look it up in there or ask some of your co-workers. I hope this helps! :)

not if it's on your own time..

Yes you should.........
If you are driving your own vehicle you should get time+ mileage.

If your company "requires" you to attend, you should be compensated for your time & milage. Mileage should only be reinbursed from your office to the seminar and back. If you went to the seminar from your residence, your daily commute miles will be deducted from the total. I attend several seminars & workshops every year & am always compensated for my time and milage, less daily commute miles.
