Does any one know if this is a scam?
a few months ago my boyfriend recived a letter saying that he could get a settlement of at least $150.00 from car insurance that he had in 1999. he does not remember what kind of car insurance he had then. he filled out the form and mailed it back. today he got a cheak for $174.00. and from everything i found on the web it seems to be legit. but i just want to make sure before cashing it in his bank account. its from Reynolds v. Hartford Fire Insurance Co. PO box 3815 Portland, Or 97208-3815
Did he have that insurance at that the time in question?
It might be a payout from a class action filed by his insurance company.
Best bet is to take it to a Check cashing place and pay the $10 to get it cashed. Don't deposit it into your account directly.
For every scam, there's a way to defeat it.

Something similar happened to me a few years back. Hubby had a loan through one of these finance places. Someone sued them for unfair biz practices or something. He got a settlement for around $250.

Don't listen to Sue's advice! She gave "wrong" advice when I asked a question recently...then she voted herself the "best answer" and I got stuck with her answer as the best answer when in fact I disagreed with her.

I received a check today for the same amount. I called Bank of America to verify that the sender's account was open. Then I called my personal bank. My bank informed me to send them the check with a note asking them to verify the legitimacy of the check. They also made a note in their computer system. This way I will avoid any bank fees if the check is bogus. I hope it's real, but it seems fishy to me.

I received the check last week, and as far as I remember we had auto policy with Hartford for about 3 months. They were overpriced and thats why we preferred another company. When I first received the letter about lawsuit, I researched it a little and it seemed legit to me.

If it is the case I am thinking about it has to do with credit scoring and the notification by the insurance company to the insureds, some people felt it was not sufficient notice. It was when credit scoring was very new & the only one that really did it at the time was Progressive. Hartford, I am guessing was second to do it. Yes, this is legitimate. It was a class action lawsuit. I am surprised he got that much!!
