My roommate's mom just took a life insurance policy out on her. She has to get a physical for it, which is standard, but they are sending someone over to our house to take blood and collect samples from our home. Is that standard? I have never heard of such a thing and think it's a bit creepy.

I know it's common to get a physical, but I think it's weird he's coming to the house. Shouldn't that be done in a lab??? |

What you've described is very routine and very accomodating to the customer.
Think about it...do you want to have to schedule an appointment and then take time off work and go to a clinic to have samples taken?
Or, would you rather schedule a mobile nurse to come to your house at your convenience and take the samples in the comforts of your own home.
A urine sample can be taken anywhere. A blood draw can be taken anywhere. They don't need to be in a lab. |

It's not unusual anymore.
I recently bought insurance for myself from Genworth Financial, and a nurse came by my house to get the blood samples and do the physical exam. Which I prefer, instead of waiting in line in a laboratory. |

A lot of life insurance agencies send someone to people's homes to check their health. This includes blood pressure, testing blood sugar, and even getting blood samples. I watched my aunt being checked in her own house (she's a nurse), and she said it was normal. |

That does sound a little weird, but maybe the insurance comp. has on call physicians that do house calls so there more convenient for the client. Maybe he then takes he samples back to his lab. Unsure, but yes I've never heard of that before and I took some classes in insurance |

It depends on the policy and practices of the insurance company. Some require proof of physical health to determine what monthly premium to charge a person; also depends on what your roommate's being insured for.
If you or your roommate have concerns, you could check to see if the insurance company is legit and not a scam. |

Yes it is common. I work for an insurance agency and we always set up the medicals through a contracted company and they come out to your home and sometimes even your job to do this. |

I do know a little bit about this I was trying to get more feedback on it because we are now split up and we never went through with it. I'm not looking to KILL him. I kind of got that feeling from you with the reply of JEEZ!
and my parents they keep saying they will do it, I never said I would do with them without their consent its just they keep procrastinating and they live in another state so I'm trying to get it started!!!
These feelings all came about when a close friend of mine had a death in their family and she had to come up with $5000 to help and it ruined her immediate families finances. THIS I DO NOT WANT TO HAPPEN TO ME.

No, life insurance companies use contractors to come to you. This is mainly to make it easier for you to buy insurance from them. I've never heard of them sending YOU to a lab - they want THEIR representative to ask you questions in person, verify the person getting the blood drawn, make sure the sample is legit, etc.
The creepy part, LOL, is the roommate taking out a policy on her life. |

i have heard of blood samples being taken at a customers home, but samples from the home is a new one to me!!! it would have to be a very large dollar amount to need samples from the home. i would have someone their with you while this is all going on, you never know nowadays, better safe than sorry. but to answer your question, yes this does sound bizarre. |
