Training & Skills: You have to get into a good training program with a reputable company in order to really get the inside track on insurance sales. I would even venture to say that you should try to position yourself with an independent company in order to ensure that you are offering the best products for your CLIENTS NEEDS, instead of the COMPANIES NEEDS!
Clients: It's a people business so you must take care of your clients and they will take care of you by referring you to others. Ethics are a must and treating others like you would want to be treated is important as well. Be honest with your clients and stay committed to helping them and you will have a long a profitable career. |

As an actuary I am often asked insurance related questions, and often very disappointed in insurance sales tactics. If I were you, I would try to build a reputation as an honest insurance salesperson. Often insurance companies play on the emotions of buyers to sell them products they really don't need. To differentiate yourself from the rest of the pack u have to be different. The purpose of insurance is to cover possible losses u cannot afford to incur yourself. Don't try to sell $100,000 policy to parents on their kids lives when they really don't need it. Instead of selling someone whole life insurance (which insurance co's love because the default rate is so high and they keep the money) advise them they would be better protected by purchasing a 5 million dollar 20 year term life policy instead of a 500,000 whole life which would cost them the same in premiums, but better protect their loved ones while it matters the most. Know your products, some are simply better than others. LISTEN to your clients so you know which is best for them. This may be the hard way to make it at first, but if your in it for the long run, reputation, getting referals is almost everything. |
