Who is the executor of his estate? The executor of the estate would need to open a bank account called, Estate of John Doe. Money could then be deposited into the estate account, which any remaining bills he had would need to be paid out of. The executor would need to sell any remaining property he had and deposit the proceeds into the estate account.
If he had a will, you need to open probate with the courts and the executor needs to show that all bills have been settled before probate can be closed and any heirs would then receive whatever is left from the Estate bank account. If he didn't have a will, you still need to open probate and the courts will decide who inherits his estate. If he had a living trust, you need to talk to the trustee. |

If your Grandfather had a will, then the designated executor can cash the check. If the estate is being probated, you will need to check with the probate court first. |

The executor of the estate has the right and duty to cash that check. They need to bring a copy of the executor agreement to the bank, and/or should be able to deposit it in your grandfather's account. |
