Does anyone know if Blue Cross Blue Shield insurance covers a counselor / psychiatrist?
Now that some people are aware of my depression, I have been asked to find a counselor / psychiatrist to talk to. My insurance is Blue Cross Blue Shield and I haven't been able to find my paperwork yet for it so I'm not sure if my insurance covers any of those options. I'd be just a tad pissed if they don't cover it at all, so I'm hoping maybe someone on here has the same insurance and knows. Or knows a quick way to find out the answer (just got the insurance 2 weeks ago so I'm still new to using it and what it covers).

I don't know if it matters or not, but I live in Wisconsin.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think it may depend on your plan. Your HR rep, or bluecross rep can help. I would call them and double-check then call your doc for a referral.

They should, but it could depend on your policy. You should call the insurance company and ask (have your card# handy). There is probably a list of authorized doctors on their website.

Good luck.

It does. Up to 8 visits and after that you'll need to be re-evaluated. Depending on the doctor, he may bypass this rule and recommend further treatment to your insurer at which point there wont even be a co-pay. Talk to your doctor about it and I guarantee you he'll work out something beneficial for the both of you. He knows they'll pay him and he knows how to get them to pay him. Trust me.

Yes, they do. Call the number on the back of the card for a referral. Good luck.

Yes you are absolutely covered. I had great mental health coverage from BCBS in both CA and RI (although I live in NY!).

Also, there have been great strides made in terms of mental health coverage - there is no annual limit to the number of appts. you have (there used to be a limit in the past). Just call the toll free #, they will even help you find someone in your area.

i have BCBS and they cover my therapist visits. i do have a co-pay of $25
some states also have a limit as to how many times a year you can see one too. so you would have to call them and ask.

call ur insurance company and ask them!

Yes, it matters whether you live in Wisconsin because Blue Cross is a different company in nearly every state.

Regardless, you need to contact the company first (number is on the back of your card), because it doesn't just matter whehter they cover it. It also matters how they cover it and you need to make sure you do it right.

rebecca c
The only thing that I can suggest is to call Blue Cross up and ask. They would probably be the best people to answer your question.
And you might need a referral from your family doctor.

Look on the back of your card for a phone number.
