rainbowcloud49 | Does anyone know if there are any government grants to help pay medical bills? |
My husband has been 100% permanently disabled for the past 6 years. Because of his disabilities, I cannot work outside the home - someone has to be here to care for my husband. We live well below the poverty level. My husband recently needed surgery to repair an aortic aneurism just beneath his heart that was ready to burst as well as a 2nd aneurism in his leg. During the surgery, the doctor had to put my husband on a heart-lung bypass machine. The surgery cost more than one million dollars of which Medicare paid 97% of the cost. Our problem is that because of our other bills (rent, electricity, car payment for our only car - we live in the country miles from anywhere & can't afford to move, furniture payment, car insurance montly payments, loan payment), we have literally no money to pay toward my husband's remaining medical bills. Our church gives us groceries every month & our children's schools supply our children with their clothing, shoes & school supplies. |

No, there aren't.
You could contact the hospital, see if they have a hardship program. Besides that, it's what you are already doing - your church family, and family & friends. |

If 97% of the bill has been paid, the hospital and doctors will probaly be satisfied with that. I dont know of any grants that will pay over the top of Medicare. If the hospital and doctors are insisting on payment and you literally have no money at all to pay on the bill, there isn't much they can do. There isn't a debtors prision in America!
If you feel that you must pay the bill, try asking around in the Christian community. I have heard that there are some organizations that will assist with this type of crisis.
I do hope your husband is feeling well now and has had a complete recovery from the aneurisms. |

Google your state and medicaid-you should be able to easily qualify for it and it will pick up the balance of your medical bills. There is one glich though-coverage can only go back retrospectively 3 months, but if you get it and it doesn't go back far enough, contact your providers and tell them that you qualified but not in time. They will probably write off the balances. Many hospitals have charity funds-call them and ask! (In fact I'm suprized they didn't get you signed up on medicaid when your husband was in the hospital!)
Medicaid or CHIPS (coverage for kids) will also get your children the health insurance that they (probably) need too!
Good luck! |

You already used it--Medicaid! And, chances are, the drs and hospital accepted what Medicaid paid, as payment in full. |

I really don't know; but I was just wanting to say I hope your family situation gets better, especially your husband.
One of the best way to get government grant is to go to government welfare office and do one on one counseling. There tell them your family situation and don't take no for an answer, because your family deserves it. If the person refuses to help you or says you can't get any grant like that, ask to talk with the Director or Administrator there. Hope everything goes well. |
