Does anyone know of a trustworthy and reasonable health insurance company?
I would love to quit my low paying job, to be home with my daughter. My husband is self employed and we are considering buying or own health insurance, as I'm really only working to pay for daycare and health insurance. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I just don't know which companies I can trust.

Believe it or not, there are some companies that will provide health insurance to part-time workers. Starbucks for one. The large health care provider / hospital in my town does also. That would be a good solution to your problem. Good health insurance companies include Assurant, United Healthcare, Blue Cross Blue Shield, WPS, etc. Find out what the A. M. Best rating is for the company. They'll tell you if you ask. Anything A, A+, or A++ is good.

I believe that the premium will be a tax deductible business expense for your husband's business. Check with your tax professional.

Good luck.

We're on United Healthcare and thus far it has been great. We've had more trouble with hospitals OVER billing and our insurance cover than we have had with our insurance.

In general things, we pay 10% of the costs with a $25 copay.

However, in emergencies they pay 100%. My husband was rushed to the ER with chest pains and over $10,000 was released. They paid for all of it except for $50 of the ambulence ride.

I've also had Blue Cross AND Coventry, both of which were terrible. I had to have an emergency c-section and Blue Cross cancelled our policy because they said that the anesthesia I had wasn't necessary. They didn't just deny the claim--they CANCELLED the policy.

No HMO's. Watch Michael Moore's Sicko to put things in perspective....I don't know of any I would trust but there could some.

Here is a web site that offers Discount Medical/Dental Plans.

The plans start at $29.95mo - $59.95mo - depending on which plan fits you. (1-20 people in your household are covered.)

The Medical Plans also include Dental, Vision, Prescription and Chiropractic also.

Check it out at http://www.helpyousavenow.com

If you have any questions just email me, I would be happy to answer any of them.

Hope this helps!

Bottom line is this - Health Insurance is expensive. Hospitals overcharge and bill in favor of themselves. The insurance is so complicated and confusing, that no one really knows for sure what is covered and what isn't. And when people try to understand the rules, they end up doing it wrong because it is so complicated to understand. But make sure as a minimum that you get something that is going to protect your family in case of a major accident or illness. Most likely, you'd pay a deductible and the rest of the bill should be covered by insurance. What cost so much is all the options, such as outpatient care, pharmancy, maternity, etc. I recommend Health Net, but the only problem with them is that they charge a co-pay for preventative care, whereas most others do not.

Sure, Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

Any company that's A rated, will be fine.

But "reasonable" usually means, "less than it really costs". FAMILY coverage costs $800 to $1000 per month. That's JUST what it costs. My guess is, that's going to be "unreasonable" to you.

Maybe you should sit down with your husband's insurance agent (the guy that writes the business insurance) and look at health insurance options - major medical coverage with HSA and high deductibles, etc.

For every good recommendation about a health insurance company there is at least one bad one. It's really a crapshoot.

I have been very pleased with a company called Medical Mutual. I live in Ohio, so I don't know if they are available in your state. The people there are all very knowledgeable and I've never had a problem with them, and I've cost them at least 1 million dollars over the years.

Blue Cross Blue Shield
HIP
Kaiser Permanente

They all cost too much and give you nothing, but Blue Cross isn't too bad, Health net isn't too bad
