As long as the "criminal record" isn't arson or insurance fraud, you shouldn't have too hard a time with this. You'll need to contact a local, independent agent. Likely Lloyds of London would be happy to pick up building & contents, or other "excess markets" as well. You'll pay extra for it.
If it's arson or insurance fraud, you're not going to be insurable, in my experience. |

Speak with a broker and be honest too, as any non disclosure may come back to haunt you when you really don't need it to. Some direct companies may insure you but will often load the premiums and stick on high excesses, shop around but if I were in that position, it would be a broker I'd speak to as they can do the work for you |

I think this will vary depending on the insurance company and the type of conviction. IMO you should look for the best insurance (try the moneysupermarket.com site for searching) and then let the company know about the record before you take out the insurance, otherwise it may not be valid in the event of a claim |

Just to pick up on the issue of background checks and disclosure - might not happen at proposal, but could happen at claim time. And then the insurer may elect to reject or reduce the claim depending on the nature of the criminal conviction.
In the UK, depending on your conviction you may find that your convictions are spent under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act. |
