There are at least four options available to you:

1) The TX Health Insurance Risk Pool: this is a "high risk pool" established by TX to cover uninsurable Texans. Many states have similar high risk pools. Here's a link:

http://www.txhealthpool.com/

2) The Texas Childrens Health Insurance Plan: this is NOT Medical Assistance (Medicaid); it's for working families that do not have insurance covering their children.

http://www.texaschildrenshealthplan.org/Visitors/CHIP/default.aspx

3) If you family's income is very low, your child may be enrolled in the Texas Medical Assistance program.

http://www.texaschildrenshealthplan.org/Visitors/STAR/default.aspx

4) As one answerer pointed out, you may be able to cover your child through your husband's employer plan, if there is one and if it covers dependents (not all do).

You may also want to contact the Texas Department of Insurance to see if there are any other options: (800)252-3439.

I hope this helps.

Common Sense
A. Stay away from any direct "solicitations" you find as an answer to your question.

B. Good luck. The real key is finding a "legit" company that will cover you. I have heart disease and went through this many years ago. The bottom line is..... why would any business looking to make a profit, sell insurance to someone that will most likely cost them money? (I don't say this to be cruel... it's just the facts).

Your first choice is your employer. If your husbands company doesn't have a plan,,,,, it may pay for you to work for a company that does. There are also "group" policies that are available. In my area I found the "Manufacturers Association" worth while. But... every area is different. There is no simple answer.

Keep looking. Don't give up. Don't buy a policy that sounds "to good to be true"!

I recommend you contact a local independent insurance broker. They will have many companies to research for your particular need. Unfortunately insurance companies have limits to taking on known risks so they've created underwriting guidelines. If all new customers came in sick the payout required to service them would be greater than the premium income. The math just wouldn't work. In Illinois, John Alden, a division of Assurant, recently produced a CSD (Condition Specific Diseases) list of diseases they will put a stop loss on. What the rider accomplishes is instead of saying a person is uninsurable due to the disease, they now become insurable with a rider for that specific condition. Though often high, $10,000 top loss, at least there is a ceiling as opposed to the client being in an open ended risk of loss. The best option would be to get your son on your husband's work policy if possible. Pre-existing would not come into play on a group plan. Good luck in your search and best wishes to your son.

There is a company my husband and I are with that we signed up for that doesn't care about pre-existing conditions since it's not insurance.

It's less than $60.00 dollars a month.

Good luck to you.

Your ONLY hope for coverage through the grownups would be through the employer - some of the larger ones will cover pre-existing conditions. For your son, if the employer won't cover pre-existing conditions, check with the Texas CHIPS program, see if they will.
