Does child support cover car insurance?
I'm about to drive but my dad keeps telling me that he refuses to pay car insurance because he says it's in the child support. However, my mom is the one who bought my car... Does child support cover car insurance?

Child support isn't "designated" to cover anything in particular.

In MY experience, having to rent a two bedroom apartment, instead of one, paying extra utilities & food, and most importantly, the health insurance, copays, food, prescriptions, school fees, etc, child support never came CLOSE to paying even HALF the extra expenses of raising the child. Health insurance and health care costs ate up most of mine, and when my guy was in daycare full time, well, OUCH!!

And HIS dad used to say, have your mom buy you that gameboy, that's what child support is for. Meanwhile, my grocery budget for the two of us was $30 a week, so that I could keep the electric on.

So no, child support does NOT cover car insurance. With your own car, budget in at LEAST $300 a month for the car insurance. Not to mention gas, maintenance (like oil changes, tires, etc) and repairs.

Child support covers the necessary things in life to survive, food clothes and shelter, to drive a car is a privilege. If you are old enough to drive you are also old enough to get a job to pay for or help pay for the insurance, gas and upkeep of the car your Mom purchased for you.

Child support payments are a fixed monthly amount which the custodial parent receives to help pay for housing, food, clothing, and other expenses for your care which should be shared.

Your father is under no obligation to pay anything additional, such as car insurance, to your mother.

For a minor you are very smart to ask this question.

I know that if it is not included in the divorce decree, he does not have to pay it. But he would be a great parent if he would willingly pay for it. It will make a more loving impact between you and him, right? A loving parent does not need for things to be in writing for him to give them to you.

Your mom could talk to a lawyer to see if this could be entered in the decree with the argument that she purchased the car for you so it is only appropriate that he pay for the insurance for you.

I do not believe he is under any obligation to pay your insurance, as it should be. You should know(and I hope he is aware) that he can rescind (this means take-away) consent for your license in some states, thus negating (also means take away) any need for insurance. You night want to consider actually working to earn the needed funds, and stop leeching from your dad.

No. Child support is to cover living expenses. Rent, food clothing, medical care, etc. I'm guessing that you live with Mom, the easiest thing is to get her to add you to her insurance, maybe make a deal and pay part?
