Does having a high cost surgery increase my companies insurance premiums the next year?
My coworker's wife is getting a Cochlear Implant surgery which runs about 60k. Im happy the insurance company has decided to cover it, I was just wondering if that will end up costing us more money the other employees with next years premiums.

Hmmm...I hope not. My 2 yr old just had open heart surgery (Rostelli/Senning procedure) and his total cost came to just under $357,000.00!

Insurance Biz CT
In CT, it would depend on the size of the company you are working for. For small groups, the renewal rates are community based, whereas large groups are based on their own claims experience. The defining line between small and large is 50 employees. This would be a good question for your HR department.

It depends on if your company self-insures. Most large companies do.

If it does, that means the cost will be covered by the company and probably passed on to the employees via their premiums.

Not for this one surgery alone, no.

Your insurance will probably go up next year but not because of his wives surgery. 60 k is nothing compared to allot of claims I see day after day.

I've worked for a health insurance company now for almost 9 years and i pay MORE and MORE every year regardless of who has what done. That is the name of the game for insurance companies.. there are kind of like the gas companies that just keep charging more and more just because they can... It's just plan wrong but the government does nothing about it so they keep doing it!

Most likely not.

It depends on the size of your company and the kind of plan they have. Self-funded plans will cost you more in the long run. If the company isn't very big, then it's possible that the additional cost incurred by the company may result in higher premiums to be paid by the company (and a small percent by the employees). If it's a large company plan, the trickle-down will be minimal.

But, don't think badly of your coworker's wife's issue. If you do, then you need to lump all smokers, fat people and everyone else that has a high health risk into the reasons behind higher premiums.
